When you're in the plane close to the Galeão airport, you will see a frightening sea of favelas. This is the outskirts of the city, don't panic because your route to the city won't pass inside them.
Also DON'T USE THE AIRPORT TAXIS when you arrive in Rio. They are known for scamming and will make you pay more than 100 USD for a run. Use Uber instead.
