pros
>in city center, everything is near
>ceiling is about 3m, compares to 2.5m of the new buildings, more comfy
>most of the time you have a real wooden parquet
>market price only up with time
>you can creep on cutie neighbor on opposite building

cons
>noise is at maximum, from outside, from upstairs (wooden structure floor), when neighbors go in and out, you can hear them in the hallway
>if it's not a luxury building, stairs are narrow and you may have a tiny elevator which can fit 2 europeans or 1 american
>tax is extremely expensive
>very hard to find a parking place if you own a car
>you might smell some piss at the front door on saturday morning
>you might get creeped on from weird grandma

They are very spacious, good locations and have good public transport links
>>
I lived in one in St Petersburg and in one here. Thick walls, location and really high ceilings were the only good parts about both of them (well also the rent in both cases but that's just my luck). Shitty old communications, old school glass panes instead of plexiglass windows and those LONG ASS FUCKING CLIMBS UP THE STAIR were no fun

I used to live in an art-deco block. It was good tbqh: I had the comfiness and aesthetics that older buildings provide, yet the luxury of modernity.

additional
>most of the time you have gaz line but to heat the apartment is by individual heater, since the ceiling is high, the place is always cold
>exterior walls are about 50cm thick, but windows are not very large, it's pretty grimy inside
>no or small balcony, you can only pop you head out for a smoke
>some big apartments are workplaces and offices, you might see a random person in the hallway (which I don't like)
>in summer, concrete keeps the heat until midnight, it's really hot and you cannot install an air conditioner because you cannot put anything outside the facade (just a mobile unit with tubes)
>>
>>69914308

Interesting. Is this because of municipal bylaws?

Most of them are now in historical city centres and have been entirely renovated. They have really high ceilings which is comfy and are generally pleasant to live in.
Pic rel, you can see my flat from there.

yes,
if the windows get old, you can install new ones with exactly same aspect, color, two panels, etc.

when the facades get dirty or old, the co property will refresh it and you'd have to pay high amount of money

you own the space 'inside' you apartment, not the separation walls or building structure,

The horror. I'm pretty sure they could have left the facade. Here people tend to only modernise the interiors of 19th century buildings or houses.

actually most euro buildings do not have air conditioning
this is mainly a canadian/US thing
>>
>>69913422
Heating those things is a nightmare due to high ceiling, thick brick walls without proper insulation and often shitty wooden windows. You either have elctric radiators and your bill is thorugh the roof or you still have the original fireplace and you get to have 19th century fun of carrying coal and firewood from the basement.I've moved to a commieblock few years ago and would NEVER EVER live in "euroblock" again
>>
>>69914777
You can renovate and make buildings more energy efficient but if they are in historical neighbourhoods or considered as historic buildings/monuments you can't change the way they look.

I live very close to pic related. It's pretty good. Interior of the building is beautiful, very high ceiling, spacious, huge windows. They almost always have a "gardien" (not sure how to translate it, they're basically a janitor, but they also bring you the mail, or can water you plants when you're not here, for example).

They have some cons though. Usually there is only a tiny elevator, they're expensive as fuck to rent (I couldn't pay the rent on my own), and expensive to heat.

Based on photos, I noticed in Russia they tend to cover their buildings with split air conditioners (the type in pic) like in east Asia. I've seen this type retrofitted on old buildings.
>>
>>69914777
They don't put back on the facade?
>>
>>69914978
I live on a house like that. Coolish in summer with those high ceilings, and freezing in winter. The fireplace is also terrible because it wasn't designed properly. If anything it sucks warm air from other rooms and makes cold air get in through every door and window crack
>>
>>69913422
Depends on the quality. It's mostly shit when they are on the edge of the town.
>>
>>69914777

What the fuck is wrong with Germans. A ton of your historical buildings were destroyed during the war, and now you want to destroy even more?

You would be crucified for even suggesting this here.

Here's how Haussmanian buildings looks inside.

I have never seen anyone ever make a fire inside those tiny fireplaces. They make nice shelves and places to hide stuff, I guess.
>>
>>69913422
They're overrated.

The only thing they've got going for them is their high ceilings (I'm almost 2m tall). Some buildings built today are only 2.35m per story which is too fucking low for anyone taller than 1.90m
It's usually expensive to live in them, unless they offer a standard of living from the time when they were built.

I'd rather live in a modern building, desu.
>>
Comfy af.

Airy, spacious, and generally just really nice and soothing experience.

>noisy

Only if you're on a lower level maybe. On higher levels it's a very nice, subtle ambiance of the city.
>>
Many of the Altbau buildings here are renovated and even have elevators. I don't think Entstuckung happens anymore tbph.

Nearly every building in Dutch city centers (except Rotterdam) are pre-1800, so you will only find those blocks at the edge of the town. Some are built for the rich and others for the poor. (Pic) are some blocks in my father's old neighbourhood.

The standard of living may vary a lot. It depends if it was an apartment house for rich and higher class or poor workers tenement house. Of course none of them is really suitable for today's living. They have unnecesarry large rooms on one hand and small and dark kitchens and bathrooms on the other.

We actually have more than a few in Mexico City that are nicely renovated, they've become something of a trend ever since Slim's renovation of the centro historico, expensive as fuck but not as bad as the historic art deco buildings in the city (waiting lists are not as exclusive also) a few do border some unsavory areas tho, especially the larger ones. in which middle class hipsters can actually afford rent.

quite nice. in the literal centre. surrounded by other oldish buildings and churches and of course old town. nice parks around in all directions. the apartments are quite big for their time. mine was 160m~2. most have two stairways with really steep steps. the stairways are nicely decorated. floors are from real wood. i had about 30cm wide oak parquet. high ceilings. 3.1 meters. makes visiting someone in a commieblock feel a bit claustrophobic. aside from gas heating usually there's at least one/two fireplaces and 'warm walls'. old ladies go to dry laundry in the attic lol. it's not uncommon to have some sort of office / shop on the ground floor or in the cellar (some people have fitted in saunas too)
