In part, also since gopniks spend lots of their free time if not most of it just farting around aimlessly, and they can't just STAND all the time, they invented a way to be able to sit down anywhere they need for 5-15 minutes.

Also apparently it's a skill that you need to train and not everyone can do it, so I suppose it can work as a shibboleth of sorts.
