Basically, it's people whose ancestors moved to America such a long time ago that it's not useful to think of them as part of whatever European ethnicity but rather as a separate, American ethnicity. Think of Europeans that settled in the original 13 colonies, possibly even centuries before the American revolution.

Well, considering the location (and I'm guessing it would cover the entire south if you subtracted all the african americans), and the fact that most later european immigrants(who would remember their heritage better) came in through the north before spreading across to the west. I would say they are people who's ancestors have been here long enough to where they no longer know or care where they came from before that.

I grew up in one of those squares, and my family has been in this country since 1660. Before that they were english, french and all kinds of shit.. but that far back and is totally meaningless.

It's been said here before, but the "muh heritage" americans usually are the ones who have stronger cultural ties to their ancestors former homelands.
