The British soldiers were tried for murder. No one would defend them in court but John Adams, who believed that a free society should not let the accused be without counsel when charged with capital crimes. Although he was a Massachusetts Patriot and eventual revolutionary credited with inciting the War of Independence, he argued their case so passionately that the very hostile Boston jury nevertheless acquitted the British, believing that they had acted in self defense (the mob was violent)
