The Irish Navy is pretty under-equipped for their role, but I feel more sympathy for the Royal Navy. The Irish navy has become (very) slowly but surely better equipped since its inception and has a limited number of responsibilities. The Royal Navy represents the UK (a major geopolitical player on the world stage) and has far more responsibilities on a much greater scale than the Irish Navy could ever dream of. They were also once the most powerful navy in the world with a huge fleet of ships.

Yet the Royal Navy's budget has been progressively cut since the end of WW2 and their fleet is only a fraction of its former size. They are also struggling to recruit enough sailors to man their ships. And while some of their ships are amongst the most modern in the world, they are often of compromised design due to penny-pinching by the government (QE2 class has ramps instead of catapults and the D-class Destroyers can't operate in warm climates due to engine issues).

It would be kinda tricky to arrange with Brexit, since we'll be sitting on opposite sides of the table - but it gives NI an "in" to the EU if ever they want it, and it would stop the EU from bullying us into giving major concessions during the Brexit negotiations - the negotiations have to be unanimous and if they're too damaging to us, we could probably just veto it until we get what we want.

It'd be quite an interesting little experiment at least.
