If Sweden hadn't taken over Finland it would have been swallowed up by the Russians, like the other Finnic peoples in Northeastern Europe were. Many of those don't even exist anymore. Back during the medieval period most of what is today northern Russia was Finno Ugric.

If the Russian empire hadn't fallen apart after WWI this would probably have happened to Finland too, given that the Russians had started stepping up their Slavization attempts gradually throughout the 19th century.

Just to put this thread to rest, Swedes are still by definition kinda looking down on us. Just look the videos about that one american gogin to both countries and interviewing people, Finns when asked about swedes say they don't care or like them, on the other hand, when goign to stockholm and asked about finns swedes say we are fat, annoying, drunks. So, yeah. Indeed what lovely neighbours, literally had more welcoming people in Russia.

Just to put my obvervations into the game. I graduated from a university last summer and after meeting some swedes and finns there, I can say that finns were much nicer people in general. Majority of those swedes were bloody arrogant and annoying, they came to UK as if they owned the fucking place and were talking all the time how good things were back in sweden. Made me wonder, why on earth did they come to glorius UK, if sweden was so much better. The finns who I met, where different, they were way more respectable and honest than than the swedes and did not pretend to know everything in the world. I'd rather spend time with ebin masters than those arrogant swedes. Fucking dared to come to my homeland and behave in a such a manner, bloody twats.
