Well, sinology professors here are apologists for the Chinese regime. Their idea of having a nuanced view of China is being a red guard of sorts. I am exaggerating and they're not all like that, but still.
Maybe the Chinese government pays them to hold those positions, maybe they hold those positions because they're sinophiles and oikophobes anyway. I am not sure.

"How Censorship in China Allows Government Criticism but Silences Collective Expression"

American Political Science Review Vol. 107, No. 2 May 2013
doi:10.1017/S0003055413000014
>>

Sorry for the format; I just copypasted from the pdf paper I have lying around here.

Abstract:

We offer the first large scale, multiple source analysis of the outcome of what may be the most
extensive effort to selectively censor human expression ever implemented. To do this, we have
devised a system to locate, download, and analyze the content of millions of social media
posts originating from nearly 1,400 different social media services all over China before the Chinese
government is able to find, evaluate, and censor (i.e., remove from the Internet) the subset they deem
objectionable. Using modern computer-assisted text analytic methods that we adapt to and validate in
the Chinese language, we compare the substantive content of posts censored to those not censored over
time in each of 85 topic areas. Contrary to previous understandings, posts with negative, even vitriolic,
criticism of the state, its leaders, and its policies are not more likely to be censored. Instead, we show
that the censorship program is aimed at curtailing collective action by silencing comments that represent,
reinforce, or spur social mobilization, regardless of content. Censorship is oriented toward attempting
to forestall collective activities that are occurring now or may occur in the future—and, as such, seem to
clearly expose government intent.
>>
>>69779346
tl;dr

you can say that Xi Jinping is an asshole and should be shot and this wont get you censored.

But if you say that "let's go to tiananmen tomorrow and demand the overthrowal of the party", that post will get censored.

But even if you say "let's all go to tiananmen tomorrow to thank the glorious communist party for building us a new highway and bridge etc." it will get censored as well, since this could cause the mobilization of people.

because i'm chinese?

For one reason, chinese text has excellent mutual intelligibility over grand time span, that is like inscription text on excavated artifact from warring states or even earlier Zhou or Shang ( 2-3 centuries BC and beyond ) can be published on mass media and spurred discussion.
Which is like text on roman/greek artifact, except that not much people understand classical latin or (ionic/doric/attic) greek that well, that made publishing these texts on media pointless.

On the other hand, Chinese had great literary and historiography tradition, that's why you had heard of soo many "china had a saying", because there are a lot of historical occurrence chinese can refer modern life to.

With a fairly accessible nebulous archive of ancestor's experiences, brings a grand world view which sinks one into it.

Oh I won't deny it. I am actually proud of it.

What you said about Shanxi reminds me of a conversation I had with a tour guide there. I asked him if Shanxi has any 少數民族, he said that on paper they don't have much, but that's actually misleading because people in Shanxi tended to be mixed as it comes to ethnic heritage. Makes me think that the regions of China where minorities are the most common are actually the ones that have most of a history of segregration.

He also told me he can go to Hohot and understand the local dialect. Is Shanxi speak really that Mongol?

I highly doubt that. And if they are, their task is not to act out the goddamn wumaodang or something. They're very tolerant and open to discussion of their country and its weaker points, much more so than your average Chinese person. One of them called 蔡英文 台灣總統 and said it's up to Taiwanese themselves to consider if they see themselves as Chinese or not. He would not say those things if his job is what you think it is.

I do know the Confucius institute isn't too happy with this particular installment though.
>>
>>69787869
can't find the article, but it basically explained the structure of the CI and how people are hired

The board of directors has a lot of former or current CPC officials, and it's the CI who hires employees and sends them abroad. The host universities don't get any say in who the CI picks.

One of my Chinese teachers said that teachers only stay in the host country for two teaching years before moving off to another country or back to China
>>
>>69788128
It's true that most of the teachers work here temporarily and then go back to China. But they are usually very young and just out of college, sometimes not even done with college yet.

My university has its own teachers too. Dutch and Taiwanese ones too, they don't really on the Confucius institute, but it might be a nice source of gongchangdangbux.

Singaporefag is correct, ancient chinese literature indeed has survived the millenia, which is one reason.

On the other hand, the fact that Chinese societal and political traditions/habits basically have been largely the same makes relating to ancient hebbenings fairly easy.

No matter the name of the respective political system or government, what rules China will always remain a dynasty.
>>
Is that guy in invalid scooter The Chairman and that upskirter he's 'Shanghai bitch' of a fourth wife?
>>
>>69791254
Actually quite a lot of didn't survive the last century; first editions and original works in Beijing archives were burned and destroyed systematically by the Reds even before 1948 and especially during the Cultural revolution.
Especially considering that large majority of these works have never been translated to any other language, they are major loss.

Cultural Artefacts =! Living Culture

This is a common western misconception, as we are used to preserve our ancient buildings and artefacts, thinking that they are the symbols of our heritage and cultural traditions.

Chinese have always burned their cultural artefacts after each dynasty (except for the Qing, who preserved the Ming stuff, which is why we know so much about them today), but their culture remained intact and largely unchanged simply because it was a culture that was living, and not a museum piece.
>>
>>69791683
For example; if we burned all artefacts and library entries about Roman history or European feudalism, this tradition will simply die out, as we nowadays have absolutely nothing in common with our roman or feudalist ancestors.

But if the Chinese burn shit from X-Dynasty, they wont change, as long as Emperor Xi and the Communist Dynasty still reigns over the country as the Han, Tang, Song, Ming etc. would.
>>
>>69791683

Yeah, sure. But do Scandinavians still sail on boats around the rivers and seas of Northern Europe, pillaging and raping unsuspecting vilalges?

No.

So, if we burnt that history, noone would know who the fuck Thor was.

Chinese, on the other hand, still live under a de-facto dynastic autocratic system. Even if the communists would forbit the people celebrating the Duan Wu festival and forbid the people from remembering poet Qu Yuan, who committed sudoku because of political repressions, modern Chinese would quickly reproduce a similiar tradition because political repression still exist, generating one Qu Yuan after another.

Living Culture is based on structural foundations. Artefact-based culture are merely museum-pieces that will die out like the Egyptian culture, once it is destroyed.

This is true, cultures throughout history constantly disassemble and rebuild themselves. Usually if some monument is still standing it's because 1. It's fairly contemporary and there was no change in rule since it was erected 2. taking it apart was too inconvenient.
>>
>>69792105
Something relevant about Egyptian culture: Iook up Akhenaten, the phraoh who attempted and failed to eradicate Egyptian religion.
>>
>>69792193
One thing I fear: I think contemporary China is actually in danger of losing its culture, because of the rapid urbanization and the literal death of the traditional village communities, which are the usual carrier of ancient traditions, due to mass-scale urban-migration.

In fact, the Cultural Revolution didnt change a lot, since it only destroyed the "Museum Pieces" of Chinese culture, but left the economic and societal foundations in the villages largely intact.

But Deng's economic reforms have radically changed the economic and societal foundations, which is the soil on which "Living Culture" grows on.

So, the recent "Chinese Tradition"-movements (Hanfu, Confucius etc.) could be indicative of the desperate attempt of the Chinese people to quickly turn their now endangered "Living Culture" into "Museum Culture" to artificially preserve it, since in the future, when 80% of China is urbanized and the village communities are dead for real, noone will recreate the traditional chinese culture anymore.
>>
>>69792346
Yeah, Akhenaten tried to pull a Mao, but like Mao, he failed because you cant change living culture so easily by merely smashing statues.

But if Akhenaten radically reformed the economy and society like Deng did, Egyptian polytheism would quickly die out within a generation, even if he smashed no statue.

I agree. The chinese state should actively preserve Chinese culture by preserving at least a minimum of intact village communities.

This has to be done not by symbolic politics, but by economic incentives for people to move back to villages and make a living there. This, of course, requires environmental protection for the country-side, as well as declaring them off-limits for industries, who would otherwise simply scam off that land from the peasants.

Actually, Guangxi and Fujian are doing it pretty well. Former was personally protected by Deng Xiaoping himself, forbidding any polluting industries to settle there as to preserve the landscape and nature, while Fujian's tea-industry is so economically relevant, that it makes economic sense to preserve the traditional rural structure.

The one most fucked, of course, are the Northern Chinese provinces, where heavy industry is king.

This of course is also a good counter-argument: Disney-ization of culture.

In the end, there needs to be a balance. Of course culture is always lagging behind progress. So some culture needs to be actively preserved and protected, or else they will simply die out due to obsolescence. But on the other hand, many traditions can actually made relevant again, even for a modern live or current political and economic needs.

For example; it isnt a coincidence that the chinese government is nowadays actively reviving many traditional festivals and making them holidays by law: This is well in line with the CCP's wish to create a more domestic consumption-based economy; and you need to give your workers more days off so that they can go and consume.

Pretty good point.

Though, from a materialist point of view, the question remains what the physical reasons for "eating with chopsticks" and "making dumplings" actually are.

For example, if one banned the usage of chopsticks for an entire generation, by both physically destroying all chopsticks and banning the practize that food has to be cut into small pieces, would the follow on generation naturally return to eating with chopsticks again?

Or what is the physical reason of eating dumplings? If there is a physical reason for that, can be destroy that tradition by banning the physical reason for it?

From the past experience, we actually know that banning things actually create new traditions: Bamboo-knife cut noodles were diectly born from the Yuan-Dynasty law that banned the Han-people from privately possessing knifes, as the Mongol-rulers feared rebellions.

>pls don't make chinese into meme-aboriginals ala western countries in their own country

Sadly, I see exactly this happening in the future.
Obsolete culture will always die, if you dont protect it by law.

Noone today would celebrate Thanksgiving for the sake of thanking some aboriginals anymore, if you didnt have a day off as mandated by law and it hence became a mere opportunity to stuff one's face with turkeys.

Same with Chinese New Year. If people didnt get the day off (by now several weeks IIRC), this tradition will die and be replaced with Western New Year, as global economic activities wind down during that time, and hence chinese employees in the Exports will see no reason to not demand a day off as well.

that's where you have to be chinese to understand

the cny is celebrated by overseas chinese people the most even more than chinese at home

the cny is based on the lunar calender of which most people have one at home

and the older folks still refer to the seasons based on the dates on the lunar calender because it is based on the seasons with the cny falling on a new moon

holidays like that are emphasised more through the importation of western ideas simply because it is a counter to it, such as the transportation crises during new years

>2. Hu Jintao - Mostly smooth sailing. Improved relations with Taiwan.

Those who speak positively about him compare him with the Guanxu Emperor, whose orders never left the confines of his palace. He wanted to do good, but he was undermined by Jiang's court-eunuchs.

Those who speak negatively about him say that he's an indecisive wet rag who was shat upon by Jiang Zeming.

>4. Jiang Zemin - Literally did nothing.

Well, he created a new model of state-to-economy relationship and arguably saved the CCP-rule from contention by the increasingly powerful economic elites by giving them a stake in regime survival. The Three Represents are very hard to understand, but if you do, you will see how large of an impact they had in the chinese system.

But he is the single biggest reason for the cancerous corruption that ravages China ever since. And the reason why Hu was such an Obongo-tier ruler who couldnt achieve anything substancial.

>3. Xi Jinping - Military reforms. Crackdown on "corruption". Need to wait and see.

Like him or hate him, but he's the consequence of the Hu years, which were characterized by crony-capitalism and the decay of central power. Xi is basically trying to be a Chiang Kai Shek, trying to destroy the local Warlord Fiefdoms of the weak Hu-era and unite China under the central leadership once again.

At this point, I dont even care if he is really fighting corruption or just replacing them with his own men: Both is OK, as long as the central government regains its authority over a Chinese government that was dangerously fractioned during Hu's time.

I'd say that he's the Duderte that China needs right now.

>100. Mao Zedong - Good wartime leader, terrible peacetime politician. Terribly misguided policies all around.

Well, he created the Party-State system that achieved something that no Chinese dynasty ever achieved in the millenia past (expect for the Qin): That the state is actually in full control over China.

>Feels weird to hear that. Perhaps it's the western propaganda but I'm tuned to think that "checks and balance" and "decentralization of power are the moral choice.

Problem is, checks and balances by corrupt people against other corrupt people does not work.
Hell, it barely works even here, where conflicting interest groups are blocking everything just for the sake of it.

And even with free media and free elections, nothing will be done if corruption is so entrenched into the system: Look at India.

The 9-man politburo during Hu's reign was basically an oligarchy of corrupt Lords who all ruled over their own small kingdoms and fought incessant wars against each other through their respective bureaucracies and command hierarchies.
China experienced so many problems during that time that could have been solved with an unified action, but instead it went to shit because vested interest groups connected with the decentralized leaders all protected their turf.

Collective Leadership was a mistake.
Deng would have never wanted what Jiang forced on the poor Hu.

Not even the last century.
Even the original works/collections of Confucius got fucked when Qin-shi-huang-ti got into power.

The chinese love burning books.

Art of war survived in fragments.
Tao te King detto.

And these are the mainstream ones.

It was stable, but he set up the problems Xi now has to face.
Also, 2002-2008 RoC-PRC relations were horrible

Stupid. It doesn't even matter to Nationalists. They assume Taiwan is theirs so they see this as normal.

NYT and sensationalists in Taiwan see this as "another Chinese provocation".

Which is bullshit. The waters are international, and they can only use them or piss off Japan.

The West is "better" because it's rich through old wealth. Not because of how its government is designed.

Compare Korea to Italy to the United States to Singapore. Just because some are authoritarian and some are "democratic" doesn't determine their development.

China has problems. And a lot of corruption. It's just that the solutions aren't so simple.
>>
>>69796545
That's probably more because of that scandal and president horsey's subsequent election.

Releasing books personally attacking the ruler of a nation is far worse than being one of the other 1.32 billion Chinese who are not Communists.

Also, there's no substantiated evidence that shows that the "abductions" were in Hong Kong.

But it is certainly a warning to them not to go out in public about it. It's like those crackdowns on brothels. They can't arrest all hookers, but they sure can bust some to scare the rest.

China used to (still kind of does) give out free spots in universities to their "fellow developing world brothers". Pissed off a lot of southern urban Chinese.

Wouldn't that be Indonesia?
I mean, since they are muslims, and they actually punish criminals (according to their own stupid set of laws) - but since niggers are usually criminals, I assumed that would be a terrible country for them.

if you don't use it will be forgotten guaranteed
i always get people who's like oh you are chinese let me write my name in chinese so you can see it in chinese, oh wait fuck how do i write so and so, oh it's okay i forget it was long time ago anyway

so basically you wasted all your time just so you can look the fool, learning a language is hard work, don't worry about all those polylinguals they will have the same problem later on, no one speaks 10 languages on a daily basis
>>
>>69807470
meh i could never speak to people so it's not like I'm losing that

I'm using chinese every day just in other ways. I just have no sense for what sounds correct because I haven't listened enough yet and never really studied grammar.
>>
>>69807594
it's no good doe
you should try to speak it, learning language is more than just an intellectual pursuit, it is very much a biological one

chinese people do not speak like the books either the daily spoken form is very varied between age groups location and situation, so while you can read and watch tv you are just doing yourself a disservice by imposing this handicap
>>
>>69779311
Interesting. I've read another paper from this same researcher, King. It was about what the so-called wumao do. His thesis seems to be that the business of the propaganda office online is primarily discouraging collective action, and not really shaping public opinion.
