How's Russian biological academia?

Russian scientific papers aren't really pubished in the common English language scientific journals so it's very hard to get any knowledge of the kind of research going on there and the quality thereof unless you've been in academia for a long time or speak Russian and soend a lot of time researching it.

China has a similar problem and there have been quite a few exposes recently on chinese research and why a lot of it bar the biggest universities is utter unrepeatable crap that only gets published in china because a lack of competition has led to fucking anything getting out.
