that takes it even further, a year of that and you can name almost every province in Europe, let alone countries

Nope its real. I remember in an /int/ thread a few months ago when a burger asked if Ankara was in Egypt. But look up any other statistics and studies online, showing the extent of:

>American Education
>>
>>69706533
We unironically learn states and their capitals instead. Feel free to bully us/meme us, we deserve it.
>>
>>69706568

>>
They don't even teach us about the countries in our own continent (same with Canada). I asked a (Canadian) guy if he'd like to visit Grenada once and he said he didn't know what that was. On the other hand, I've only met one other person (who wasn't actually from the caribs) who knew about St. Lucia, St. Kitts & Nevis(?), St. the other ones and occasionally one or two people who knew what Belize was because they speak English.
I know all the euro countries btw.

We unironically learned the states, capitals and rivers of the United States. The rest of the world, it's capitals and rivers is also taught.
>african countries are my weakspot
>>
>>69705913
No, most Americans are genuinely stupid and often forget there's a whole world outside of North America.
>>
>>69707007
I couldn't grasp the african countries either, their irrelevance is something that was the reason I believe.
>>
>>69707007
You did? Isn't that kind of a massive waste of time? There are like 15 states in America that are relevant by themselves, the rest are pretty much arbitrary lines drawn in the ground.
>>

All of your states are squares and it triggers me to no end.
>>
>>69707116
it's called being civilised and general education including geography is a part of it.
>>
>>69707309
Africa also has unique history and culture but that doesn't make them relevant.
Relevant states are: NY, CA, TX, FL (kinda), VA, and MI (between us and Canada).
Maybe ID (potato), HI (history + fruit), KS (sunflowers), WI&VT (cheese), GA (Coke), and AK (fish).
>>
>>69706295
>Glad to see college paid off
This triggers me so much.
Retarded Amerilards will refuse to learn anything and then blame the education system rathee than their shit work ethic.
>>
>>69707457
Okay nobody was saying otherwise, it's just a lot of American states are literally just squares we drew out on a map to divide up the massive unpopulated territory we had bought or conquered from other countries. They're about as relevant as postal codes. I already said that some should be taught.
>>
When I'm abroad I make sure to tell Americans that if global warming keeps its pace, my igloo home in North Vancouver will melt.
>>
>>69707007
We had to label world maps and capitals, then do rivers, states, their capitals, etc. Idk if my school was the exception or the rule though.
>>
>>69707776
kek
>>
>>69707526
Well we just have different approaches to geography. I just think the places that developed organically are more important to learn than Amerisquares just because some of them may have a particular industry. If you were a foreigner you could go your entire life just thinking of those areas generically as "America" and it wouldn't effect your knowledge of this country. Meanwhile learning all the states I just mentioned would allow you to understand our politics and history as a whole much better.
>>

I think it's easier to look at regions. Knowing that the great plains produce food is easier than knowing their names, knowing about Dixie Southern culture vs California vs Pacific Northwest, etc is easier than knowing all of those individually.
>>

Right, so calling food "irrelevant" is quite dumb. That's like saying "well all Russia has is oil, why would Hitler even want to invade them?"

Resources are relevant, especially food and energy. The easiest way to determine whether something is relevant is to remove it and see what collapses.

Hint: it's not Californian films.

That's a pretty level-headed way of looking at it. It's a two way street, you need to fix your fucking schools and Europeans need to start giving people a reason to know about them instead of just demanding they do.

A good example is Finland. There is literally not a single reason for anybody to care about them irl but even the most geographically retarded people on 4chan know where they are, who they are, their capital, and have a decent overview of their history. All because their internet culture is so entertaining.

In my experience, public schools don't teach anything that isn't American. U.S. history is the study of domestic American history. World history is the study of what the U.S. has done abroad.

My shit education seems pretty typical as my extended family who live in New England, the Midwest and Florida give an impression of ignorance similar to what my high school peers gave me.

Then again, I grew up around wholesale retards. Shakespeare was most exotic topic my high school explored. Girl asked, "how do we know these things actually happened," when we were reading Macbeth. She also burst out laughing when we looked at the geography of Britain to get a sense of the plays setting. The country of Wales has a funny name according to her. She was 18 at the time.

We had to memorize every european and Asian nation in History as well as every german state in both English and German in German 1.

damn, public or private? which state? back in CA, I went to public, but we were kind of jewish and would accept out of district students who would raise our test scores. lots of chinks and some mexicans who were good at football. we were always competitive and very prideful about the honors/advanced/ap programs. most of the kids were idiots though. AP classes were a joke and some of the retards in my history classes were astonishing. not a bad school tho
>>
Seriously someone had to memorize countries and their capitals in school? Nobody does that here. Educated Russians can probably find "well known" countries, like Germany or France etc. But I doubt the average Russian can find even 10 or so european countries. Face it, most people are dumb everywhere. Don't let autistists on /int/ convince you otherwise.

I set a rule that I'm not gonna look at a map until I'm done

Haven't put the Netherlands on there for some reason

Forgetting a lot of Southeast Euro and North African countries. I know I can get Morocco. Totally forgot whatever's in the middle of the middle east. Some of the proportions might not be totally right? Will have to put Taiwan and Japan on the map.

Then the captions. Egh. Probably will put it in a new thread.

Yes and no. Europeans just think knowing Europe + a couple of big countries in the world makes them knowledgeable.

The average European doesn't know the location of most US states, just like the average American doesn't know the location of most European countries.

A friend of mine, who is in graduate school, thought that New Hampshire was south of Massachusetts. She is from Massachusetts and was in New Hampshire when she said that.

She also thought that Alaska was an island, because it looks that way in maps of the US.

Another friend of mine who is in a different graduate school program thought that Brazil was in Africa.

So yes, Americans are fucking retarded at geography, at every level of education.

The only reason American has any wealth/value at all is because it is mostly propped up by foreign investment. If they liquidated their holdings in American companies, your nation would go to shit within days. It would be like the recent housing crash but a hundred times worse.
I don't know if it's arrogance with Americans or just ignorance of the real world.
>>
>>69717977
It's funny, Australia is almost as large as America but has fuck all states by comparison:
http://lizardpoint.com/geography/australia-quiz.php
There are obvious historical and geographical reasons behind this, but for the sake of size comparison it's generally amusing.
From the geographical comparison, it would kind of be like stretching the Nevada desert and all the way across to the far right side of Tennessee while pulling it as far north as Montana and as far south as Oklahoma. Travelling through the USA is so weird in that within a couple of hours the climate can be completely different.

That's not particular to the USA. The general public don't care about these things. If you do an interview like that in any other country you'd probably get similar answers. People want to know what's happening with Kim Kardashian or some other stupid useless celebrity, people want to know that fucking Queen Elizabeth has a flu and couldn't go to a fucking Christmas party (yes, I saw something like that on the first page of some news websites), people want to watch the lip sync competition, the celebrities dancing on fucking ice.
People enjoy being dumb. Maybe they're right. Knowing the shit that happens around the world makes us feel bad for living in such a horrible place, thus It's better to just pretend that none of that exists or, if it exists, it happens far away from where we live.
