Only because it borrows from such diverse sources. The vocabulary is 50% Italian and 30% Arabic. Of course the language is unique.

When I was about 10, I was in an old bookshop in England, and I found a book about learning Maltese. Every time I remember that, I regret not buying it. I could be the only Maltese speaker in Ireland.
