Those girls are pretty cute, must mean that Japanese seed remains strong after all these decades.
>>
I hate 就.
I can understand it alright, but really have no idea when to use it when talking/writing myself.
>>
>>69407624
I can't help too much but I think part of the difficulty is that it is 虚词 so it has no real meaning on its own but rather just has tons of grammatical functions that are different.

So I think if you focus on one specific structure at a time like 如果...就... then maybe it is not so hard to understand.
>>
>>69407875
Yeah, I guess. The 如果...就... construction is relatively straightforward though, its function is not as vague as when or not to use 就 for emphasis or instead go for a 是...的... construction.

I think the closest equivalent in English might be "so", as it has about the same function in drawing conclusions and fits a couple of the other constructions as well.

Can someone explain to me in what contexts 确实 and 肯定 are used?

For example, if I wanted to say "OP is definitely a dumbass", would I say “楼主确实是一个傻逼” or “楼主肯定是一个傻逼”?

Furthermore, what words exactly represent "definitely" in Chinese? I know 一定 means "definitely" in a future sense; for example, I know "Trump will definitely make America great again" is “川普一定会让美国再次伟大”. But I'm not sure what word to use in other contexts.

Ya know, does anyone else think that this guy is a fucking pussy? I've met plenty of foreigners who have done business in China for years, and none of them were as bitter as this guy. And when I read other stories about doing business in China, they'll describe times when they wanted to pull their hair out, but they still stay in China.

It also seems like he had such a bad experience cause he was working in the steel-sector, which is pretty much all SOEs. I feel like if he was working in a sector more dominated by private companies, like say the tech sector in Shenzhen, he probably wouldn't be as bitter.

As has been mentioned, China has a form of comedy called "crosstalk" (相声 or xiangsheng). It usually involves two comedians, and the closest equivalent in English would be routines like Abbott and Costello's "Who's on First?".

Unfortunately, the jokes nowadays are far too tame. It used to be full of dirty jokes and dark humor, along with biting commentary on current events, but the Communist Party killed all that with censorship.
http://www.danwei.org/tv/stifled_laughter_how_the_commu.php

Some jokes that can be performed in public are still pretty funny though. Here's one by Dashan, a Canadian comedian who speaks perfect Chinese.

I am extremely upset that my lieutenants dragged me away before I could ask the KTV girl for her WeChat.

The only hope I have now is to ask the other hostess, who added me, for her WeChat but the probability of success in that endeavor is less than 50%. It would also be embarrassing for me to ask since technically I was molesting her during the drunken night out as well. Both of them liked it, however I liked the one that got away. Here's one Chinese joke I really like, in English first and then Chinese:

One day, my Dad ran into me bringing my girlfriend home.
He says to me: "Don't worry son, I won't tell your Mom, this will just be our little secret".
I reply: "Okay, thanks"
The next morning, our whole family is eating breakfast together. My Mom asks me, "Son, where did that hickey on your neck come from?"
I say: "This is me and Dad's little secret".
Afterwards, the mood in our family is very uncomfortable...

>Is the government or its ideology ever the subject of the deeply cynical kind of joke that has been mentioned here?

If you look at the comments section on Weibo, Zhihu, etc., along with Chinese forums like Tieba, they're full of cynical and sarcastic jokes about the government. These jokes are often deleted by censors, but it shows that Chinese still have the capacity to make political jokes.

One joke I saw recently that I really liked: "Without the Communist party, there'd be no New China. Without Henanese, there'd be no security doors" (没有共产党,就没有新中国。没有河南人,就没有防盗门).

The reason I'm interested in China is because I find the amount of change China has experienced in the past 40 years to be absolutely fascinating. China is a very dynamic society, and I love watching this nation develop. I'd say "China watcher" describes me better than "sinophile", I don't care too much about traditional Chinese culture (and I'm more interested in modern Chinese history than ancient Chinese history), but I closely follow all news related to Chinese society, politics, and foreign policy. I also feel China and East Asia in general should be the focus of US foreign policy rather than the Middle East, Europe, etc.

Chinese pop music really does suck, but China actually has a fastly growing indie rock scene which I love following:

I don't think China will "collapse", but I think China (like all economies) will inevitably go through a recession at some point. Gordon Chang and others who continuously say that China will collapse anyday now are idiots; but I think it's naive when Chinese just label any concerns about the stability of the Chinese economy as "anti-China propaganda" and assume that China will always have high economic growth.

Really, you ask twenty different people about the Chinese economy, you get twenty different answers. Probably only the top leadership of the CCP knows the true state of the Chinese economy.

Nah, now that my Chinese is relatively fluent, I'll probably start learning Japanese soon. Despite learning Chinese for years, I'm still kinda a weeaboo since I like anime, J-pop, and want to travel to Japan someday.

I'm still glad I studied Chinese first though. As I said here, I find China to be incredibly dynamic, especially compared to Japan. Japan still produces a lot culturally, but in every other aspect they seem stagnant. Being a "Japan watcher" probably isn't as fun as being a China watcher.

I've also heard from people who've lived in both China and Japan that they find Chinese to be much more easy-going and relaxed. They'll say they never got invited to a Japanese friend's home while living in Japan, whereas I've been invited to my Chinese friend's home many times and they've even cooked meals for me.

I also think Chinese have every right to object to historical revisonism by Japanese nationalists, and that too many foreigners dismiss anti-Japanese sentiment in China as "brainwashing". It's kinda hard for Chinese to "get over it", when Japanese keep saying shit like the Nanjing Massacre, Unit 731, etc. never happened.
>>
>>69494226
You krauts consistently prove you have the worst taste in asians
>>
>>69495093
But it's also kind of hard for the Japanese not to behave the way they do when admitting wrongdoings and giving in means making concessions to China, and making concessions sends a clear message that Tokyo will do whatever the bloody hell Beijing wants if it drags some sort of war history into the conversation.

The Chinese could get over the Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution, they can certainly get over Japan as well.
>>
>>69493684
>New Taipei.

女票 definitely has to be mainland slang then. There seems to be a lot of difference between Taiwan and mainland China slang. For instance, I've seen Taiwanese use the Japanese word for boobs ("oppai", and written in Chinese as 欧派), but I never seen mainland Chinese use that word.
>>
>>69495093
Good luck, Japanese is like 3 times as hard as Chinese, but knowing kanji ahead of time will at least let you focus on the important parts of the language.

You make a good point, but I still feel that Japanese politicians have a habit of making revisionist statements about the war unprompted. It would be best if Japanese politicians would just shut up about the war; it's not like they'll be able to convince the world that their war was really a mission to "liberate the peoples of East Asia".

I also find such statements annoying as an American because it draws us in too. Our alliance with Japan means there's now a chance we may go to war with China over uninhabited rocks, and I feel revisionist statements by Japanese politicians is one reason the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands dispute is as bad as it is. Because if Chinese renounce their claims to the Diaoyu Islands, they're essentially giving in to a nation which denies it committed war crimes against them.

These statements (especially over comfort women) also piss off South Korea, and for a while this had the effect of driving South Korea into the arms of China. This rapprochement between South Korea and China only ended because Fat Kim III tested one nuke too many, and South Korea then decided it needed THAAD after all.

And I think the reason why Chinese are more willing to get over the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution is because those were atrocities committed by Chinese towards Chinese. Humans tend to be more forgiving of suffering inflicted on them by their own countrymen, and less forgiving of suffering inflicted on them by foreigners.
>>
>>69495506
Taiwanese truly are the biggest weebs of East Asia, and quite possibly in the world.
>>
>>69495937
You make some fair points too my friend.
But honestly, the Chinese government has way too much to gain from having some sort of diplomatic controversy with Japan. They'll just make up a new one even if the current ones get resolved.

It's like Argentina with the Falkland islands, whenever the people are frustrated and need to be distracted, the government can just point at those to save its arse.

On the one hand, the way the Japanese deal with their history can be annoying, but on the other hand the Chinese government cynically stirs out controversy about it for concessions and domestic political gain.
>>

I concede your gf is gorgeous but your other posts are awful

Yeah, Japanese grammar and honorifics is the one thing I'm dreading. One thing I loved about Chinese is its simple grammar: no cases, no gender, no tenses, no honorifics, no "polite speech", and it's SVO. I started studying Chinese after studying German in high school (and I hated German), so I was thrilled when I first heard I wouldn't have to spend time memorizing the cases and gender of words.

Learning to write characters was actually my favorite part of Chinese, and I laughed whenever I saw Japanese learners complaining about the amount of characters they have to learn. The fact that kanji has multiple readings will be a challenge; and since I only studied simplified characters and not traditional, I'm not sure how much of the characters I know are also simplified in Japanese. But still, I'm glad knowing Chinese first will help me with kanji.
>>
My girlfriend is Chinese. She's adorable and surprisingly thicc. Spends lots of time taking photos and cooks really well.

Japanese is somewhere in between traditional and simplified Chinese, usually more on the traditional side. They also have some simplified characters of their own that are different from the ones you see in China.

Right, I'm not denying that the Chinese government uses history and anti-Japanese sentiment as a way to distract Chinese from domestic problems. They undoubtedly do, and "Patriotic Education" has definitely made Chinese youth more nationalistic.

I would still say though that revisionist statements by Japanese do the job of the CCP Propaganda Department for them. So that's why I object when I see foreigners imply that anti-Japanese sentiment is 100% government brainwashing and that Japan is doing nothing wrong.
