and have been doing some research and google mapping to see what the different countries look and feel like

and the thing i'm most shocked by is how poor everything looks compared to where i'm from. granted i'm from the extreme upper class in america, but damn

Well yeah, I am from Eastern Europe and it is quite different than Central Europe that V4 is, they are more civilized than EE (earn more, have cleaner environment etc.) but at the same time right across the border you have countries like Germany and Austria where you earn ten times more for same job. You are right, you should watch the Slovak translation sometime, as it is supposedly the one most faithful to Hungarian (Aladár is Aladár, not "Ládínek", Gejza is Gejza not "Vladimír" etc.).

The worst dubbing ever through is from one DVD series released here and quickly redone with original dubbing. Some Prague based company translated the Czech dubbing to Slovak word by word instead of using either Slovak or Czech original dubbing, it was atrocious:

I have seen articles like ones you linked from 1998 yet I have a friend who was born after that year and has no problem reading whole books in Slovak. These polls are also highly manipulative as even I did not understand some words on there. I can easily imagine presenting some poll with cencúľ, ťava etc... and people being bewildered by them. In those "Do you understand Czech/Slovak" quizes they never present the 92 percent of words that are the same, but the 8 percent that are not.

Also "úplne bez ťažkostí rozumie". So 25 percent of young Czechs understand Slovak near perfectly. I would wager the rest did answer something like "yeah we understand but some words are funny and unknown". Hell, I grew up with Czech and yet have no idea about their month names.

It was done on 18-30 year olds, avg. age 23, and basically comes to conclude there is very little difference of understanding between the two.

What I am saying is, the "study" in that clickbait article is even less than anecdotal evidence, since anecdotal evidence at least comes from personal experience. A Czech person would be less sure in their understanding of Slovak because outside of Gogos youtube channel young Czechs barely know how Slovak sounds so they cannot even say how well do they really understand it. I have met people who had this stereotypical view of Slovak as always being like heavy Central dialects with ľ, ä and ô everywhere and expressions like ľaľa ho papľuha ogrcal mi krpce were surprised at how people from Trnava speak for example.

Using Praha as a guideline for how much Czechs understand us is quite idiotic as well, considering it is one of the westernmost native areas of Czech language (go west too much and you will encounter formerly German areas resettled by Moravians after 1945). Inak myslím si, že aj tých ľudia čo majú s porozumením druhého jazyka mierne problémy by to rýchlo prešlo keby raz za týždeň sledujú slovenský kanál či youtube video.
