I was born speaking cantonese and learned to speak mandarin in school back in chinkland. It's not complicated, just think of them as two very different accents of the same language. If you want to start learning, learn cantonese first because it's more complex and you'll translate very easily to mandarin.

Depends where the mandarin speaker is from. Heavy mandarin accents are awful but mandarin can also sound very cute, especially when spoken by non-mainlanders. Cantonese on the other hand is almost always ugly
