You can go through RTK in a couple months easy. I don't really recommend RTK personally, but if the scary characters are the main problem then 2 months is a pretty small setback in the grand scheme of things.

Of course Japanese is way harder than something like spanish where you can guess half the words with no knowledge of the language just because they sound kinda similar to English words though, but you need to compare it to other languages that have little in common with English, like Russian or Arabic.

I made this infographic a while back to help with my own study of Japanese verbs and get my head around groups. It's making use of Tae Kim and some other points I picked up. I know there's a more complex infographic floating around of all the different groups and variations, but I thought this was easier to read and at least a foundation. The rule is often ignored or proved wrong, but it's worth knowing. It might be of use to some of you.

オゴン = wagon/possibly a name?
ャシ= hut/house/(dozens of others, context required)
パーッ = part/component/each

My best guess is that he's politely referring to her in an archaic way ("You, the daughter of another") and saying he likes a certain part/thing about her. I'm stumped otherwise.

Wild card - possibly a typo on the part of the mangaka, unless he has a lisp or something, since シャバーッ can sound like an elongated 'dangerous/unsatisfactory'. So maybe he's aware of her stalking and calling her a 'dangerous girl', using that polite オゴ expression.

What some consider xenophobic is just their first experience of being considered 'other'. The Japanese aren't hostile or necessarily rude or difficult. Many 'Japanese-only' bars have removed their signs and more places are trying to appeal to Western styles and sentiments. But part of the appeal of Japan is that they have their own way of doing things. That's what you go for, presumably. If you want to enjoy a more open and Western way, stay in Tokyo and go to the tourist areas.

My own experience - Japanese are incredibly shy and quiet around foreigners because they assume they won't be understood and it will cause trouble. They're wonderfully helpful and polite if you talk to them in Japanese. They don't appreciate loud people, especially in elevators (was with some noisy American friends and got called 'baka gaijin' by some girls). And some of the older ones glare and spit.

If you changed the daily card amount you change it back the same way you changed it in the first place. If you do it in custom study though you're stuck with those cards. However, you can decrease the "daily" cards for a day to kind of fix it back

For example, if you daily cards are set to 20, and you use custom study to add 30 new cards, then you are stuck with those 30 new cards (until anki resets at the end of the day). However, if you temporarily set your daily new cards to 20, you will only have 30 new cards instead of 50.

Concept #1
Adjectival Nouns: Adjectival nouns describe properties of things just as adjectives do. Unlike adjectives they don't conjugate, but behave similar to nouns. Adjectival nouns come in two flavours, na-type and no-type.

Examples:
綺麗な庭 kirei na niwa - a beautiful garden
本当の話し hontou no hanashi - a true story

綺麗 is a very common kanji and you will see it all the fucking time in every fucking manga. So you gotta learn it. But don't memorize that shit by rote, you need to become one with the kanji. Also focus on the on'yomi or chinese readings. You can learn that kun'yomi shit later.

綺麗 is made up of two kanji. 綺 ki and 麗 rei.

綺 means figured cloth or beautiful. It is made up of thread 糸, big 大, mouth 口, barb亅 and one 一. These radicals create a story. The thread is threaded through the mouth using a barb, one by one, to create a big beautiful cloth. Here is the truly beautiful bit, the main radical in the story is 糸 or キ. Most other kanji that have this ki radical will also be read with a ki sound:
- 糺 kyuu - ask, investigate, verify, twist (rope)
- 級 kyuu - class, rank, grade (literally climbing a rope or social ladder)
- 記 ki - chronicle, account, narrative, history, annals, geological period
- 紅 kou - crimson, deep red

Pretty cool huh. Be careful though, as there are always exceptions, but really exceptions, but linguistical nuances. The big divide comes from Japanese readings (kun'yomi) and Chinese readings (on'yomi). The words I listed above are Chinese derived, so they follow certain rules. Always separate kanji (like 綺麗) and kanji+hiragana (話し), one will almost always (except for names) be on'yomi and one will almost always be kun'yomi.

Next word. 庭 means garden, courtyard or yard. This one is fucking easy. Let me break it down for you. The king 王, under the cliff 广takes a stroll 廴. During the middle ages only Kings had access to gardens because they were so expensive to maintain, this is represented by the kanji. This 广 cliff radical usually has something to do with nature or natural things. You will see it crop up over and over again, unfortunately it won't help you read the kanji - but it will be a memory aid. This 廴 long stride or stretching radical is actually a foot, you will see it in things like 週 shuu (week) or 辺 hen (area). Like the cliff it is also a minor radical and doesn't add to the phonics of the kanji.

本当 is another easy one. 本 means origin or true (in this context). Its literally a 木 tree with a 一 root. See how the ichi 一 radical is sometimes used as part of a picture. When you see it, don't automatically assume it means one, rather try and visualise it as part of the image. 当 tou is actually a tough one. It can be read in two different ways, but both derive from the same image. This ⺕ is a pigs head and above it is 小 small. Though 当 also means to hit or appropriate. To me it looks like an arrow striking a pigs head, like target practice. I don't really know the etymological root of this kanji, but it is good to think of it as 'this'.

庭 ニワ - never forget

本当 in the sense of 本当の話し means 'factual story', though 本当 is often used in everyday speech as 'really'. You can think of the kanji as hitting 当 the root of things 本.

話す hanasu means to talk. As in, I want to talk with you. Another word that is often used as a synonym is 喋る shaberu, which is translated as 'talk' but I feel it is closer in meaning to the English word 'converse'. A really useful survival phrase is 英語を話しますか? eigo o hanashimasu ka? Do you speak English?

Anyway, 話 is made up of 言 gen (word) and 舌 zetsu. 舌 is actually interesting because 手 te/shu means hand and 口 (kuchi) means mouth. So 舌 is literally the hand of the mouth. 言 is actually also really interesting because it also has 口 and all these little 一 lines. It's literally a picture of sound waves/syllables exiting a mouth making a word. So when you are emitting sound waves from your mouth and wagging your tongue you are talking 話.

話す ハナス - never forget - the shi at the end turns the verb into a noun. 話し - discussion, talk, conversation.


Now to finish this lesson, we will read a popular anime title.

Okay, first kanji 言 - we know it means words. Right words の of 葉 liney things above more liney things above a tree. This 艹 radical means grass. So, what is grass in a tree? Leaves! Another の followed by 庭 - yep king for a stroll at a cliff. Garden.

Wtf is Kotonoha? We didn't learn that shit in the lesson! Well shit, welcome to real life. 言の葉 is an archaic Japanese word for 'word' or poem. However, despite not knowing the word you could actually read it.

Depends, but in general Japanese people give physical gifts for birthdays and special events. Some special events like the coming-of-age day have special cultural gifts that are specific to that event. Gift giving is a huge deal in Japan.

Generally money in Japan isn't considered a gift, it's more like a stipend - something you receive for your position in society, ie. a child or an elderly person. Children in Japan receive allowances of money per month/week to use for themselves. Think of the new years money as an end of year bonus for being a kid. Allowances and end of year monies are considered cultural obligations instead of gifts.

There is a huge culture of child independence in Japan. The whole idea of giving money to a kid is to start training them to make decisions and spend the money wisely.

I've finished RtK1 in 2 months adding above 50 new kanji a day in the latter stages. Here's my stats taken the day when I finally learned the last one for reference. I was doing production and writing each character before showing the answer and checking if I'm correct. Takes some time and dedication but it's doable.
Are you also studying grammar and doing core? If yes then your study plan is quite ambitious. Personally, I've decided to learn things step by step. First I've learned hiragana and katakana, then familiarized myself with the Kanji and now I'm studying core. I've read some about the basic grammar to make sense out of the example sentences in core but for now I want to focus on building up my vocabulary.
I think the most important thing is to be consistent in your studies regardless of method. You just have to spend each day a set amount of time regardless of circumstances.

Fluency has no correlation with teaching a language.

I'm fluent in German and I would not be able to teach it effectively. I'm not fluent in Japanese, but I know more about kanji than 99% of native Japanese speakers. Why? Because I enjoy etymology and I understand kanji at a deeper level.

Fluent Japanese speakers only know kanji by rote and recognition. Give them unfamiliar kanji or ask them to write complicated kanji and they will have no idea. Hell, I even teach Japanese people about kanji etymology, because they don't learn it in school. If you ever stepped into a Japanese school and observed a Japanese lesson taught by Japanese you will understand why most Japanese can't write their own language by hand.

That aside I was an English Teacher for three years, taught in Japan for a year and have been studying Japanese for 10 years.

So how many Anki cards are you meant to do daily? I was learning 20 per day because that was the recommended amount on core 2k/6k but I felt pretty swamped, trying to get the pronunciation on top of recognising them was a bit much for me.

尸 this radical is used as 'corpse' as well, derived from placing an awning or covering over a corpse. In the sense of 眉, the 尸 covers the eye 目.

I have another idea though. 屓 means to show patronage, but it can also be used in the sense of (~をえこ贔屓する) showing favoritism or (贔屓の~) favorite thing. The 貝 represents money, because they used shells in the old days as currency (as seen in 貨). Most modern uses of money use 金 as gold became the currency standard, but you see 貝 in some more archaic kanji.

This idea of being patronized by a lord under a flag comes from 屓. 眉 can be thought of in a similar way, instead of the covering of the eye, it is the 目which pledges allegiance to the flag 尸, which the women 女 is holding.

Or it could simply be the women is raising her eyebrows to your flirtatious advances (or using her eyebrows to lure you in ha).

It's fine to go a bit lower for the first couple months if you are reading grammar and doing some radical/individual kanji study on the side, but you really do want to be doing 20 eventually. They get a lot easier once you start knowing most of the kanji.

Question that has been bugging me forever.

I work in construction in Vancouver, towers mostly.
In buildings the Japanese and Chinese (I think) skip the 4th floor because 四 and 死 share the same pronunciation so it's really bad luck or something. So people were talking about it and asked me since I'm learning Japanese.

I told them yeah they do but you can also pronounce 四 as yon instead of shi and shi also has a shitload of other verbs. So I don't understand why they wouldn't get nervous every time they say shi in a word since shi is death. For example,

Basically why does it only apply to the fourth floor of a building? I was basically talking out of my ass to my coworkers.

Rarely is it both the 13th and 4th missing, it's one or the other or none.
