Why were America and Canada able to shake off the Union flag but not Australia and New Zealand?

Kiwis would have changed it but those that wanted change didn't approve of the design that went up against their current flag. If the process wasn't so rushed, if it were more drawn out and comprehensive, they would have changed it.
As for us, we will likely have a referendum for becoming a proper republic when Elizabeth II dies, we would still remain in the Commonwealth though. If that went through then we'd likely have another process and referendum for changing the flag. There are plenty of good designs for both countries already present, it's just a matter of the right situation and in that people will want to keep our present one. For Aus once old cunts die and the flag becomes a point of talk, the change will likely be successful.
Remember that Australia & New Zealand have had several processes for changing the flag but the present ones won out every time.
