French
I don't like all the exceptions and irregularities in verb conjugation and adjective/noun masculine/feminine/plural forms. It feels like I have to memorize hundreds of different patterns. But other than that, I think I'm making progress in understanding grammar. I can't wait until I can actually read books or listen to French songs

You'll get used to it, French is pretty logical 2bh. But yeah, memorizing gender pronouns fucking sucks.

On another note, is there any reason to learn the past historic tense, which AFAIK is only used in literature? It's kinda fucking with me cause sometimes I'll read a book and see "fut" (third-person singular past historic form of "être") or something similar but I feel like it'd be useless.

I've talked with french teachers and they usually say that it's irrelevant/usuless to learn passé simple. Basically you can pretty much understand/presume when it's written and there is no use outside of the classical french literature.
Fun fact: Lebanon has a pretty large francophone community and they use this tense in everyday conversations. Even french people sometimes can't understand them
>>
>>69238078
What the fuck? Why would they do such a thing?
>>
>>69238118
They used to be a french colony. I guess it was at a time where passé simple was still at use and they kept it.

I am a chicano that wants to learn spanish because of family, but I'm so lazy and negative that I'll never be able to learn when I'm in this state. I've "started" learning and stopped so many times. The last time was trying to read the bible with a copy in english and spanish. I didn't even finish reading the first chapter of Genesis. I have a deep insecurity about it.

I was trying to learn a third language for a whole week now, more like finding out which I want to learn. (English and German of course being the two I speak already)
I ended up with wanting to learn Swedish. Does anybody here know where and how to start? I never actively tried to learn a language. ENglish was more picking up piece by piece over the course of pretty much my entire childhood + teeens.
>>
>>69270993

OK how am i wrong?

What language should I learn?
I don't know which one to choose. I tried learning Swedish and other Scandinavian languages, but they don't REALLY interest me. I thought about learning another Latin language, but they all sound like Spanish to me (no offense). I have no interest on learning Asian languages also.
Now, I want to learn a Slavic language, but I'm afraid I'll get bored again or that I won't find good entertainment to "consume". Should I learn a Slavic language? Which one? Do (a lot of) people actually produce (good) entertainment in that language?
Sorry to bother you with these questions, but your opinions would really help me out.

Want to learn a bunch of languages but never have the motivation to stick with them more than a couple of months.

Chinese for the characters and a small interest in the history. No interest in visiting the country, the women, or politics

Russian for the politics, history and how it opens up central asia and the Caucasus' (wouldnt mind spending a few years living there either).. Find the language disgusting.

Arabic for the wars, religion and potential employment opportunities in 10+ years time. Disappointing how few people each 'dialect' buys you.

Italian for family. Everything else about the language and country is 'meh'.

I was learning Russian but lost interest probably because everyone in my family thought I was a weird cunt for just wanting to learn a language. Know how to read most words because I learnt the alphabet pretty well (and that's all you really need to read in Russian), but even if I can read it I have no fucking clue what it means. Besides that I know some basic phrases and that's about it, gave up like half a year ago

Recently I've taken a liking for Spanish though. My ultimate goal is to learn Italian but most people I've asked have said if you want to learn Italian then you'd be dumb to not learn Spanish first. Apparently Spanish is a lot easier to learn than Russian, and when I was actually trying to learn Russian I was making decent progress, so hopefully I should be able to make pretty quick progress with Spanish. At the moment I'm just bookmarking/downloading a bunnnnchhh of resources and I'm going to go through and sort out where to start/progress soon

Anybody got any tips for learning Spanish? And tips in general for keeping yourself motivated when learning a language all on your own?

>>
>>69289031
huh that's funny. My general is shit, but I always help people with english. It makes me glad that others want to learn our language. I guess that is the difference between the first and the third world when it comes to mentality. But generals are cancer anyway and are ruining this thread.
>>
>>69288992
I used to come to /int/ mostly for /lat/ five years ago. It used to be a better place. ;_;

Also, I actually learned French (to a high-intermediate-ish level). I'm trilingual and nevertheless a virgin. And people here tell me I shouldn't laugh at them for studying a language to get a qt. THERE'S NO WAY OUT OF YOUR AUTISM, LADS.
>>
>>69289057
I like generals, just a sort of comfy place to hang out with people you can relate to. In /balt/ + /ausnz/ it's weird because I can obviously relate to /ausnz/ but /balt/ is a whole new culture and it's interesting to see their opinions on shit; other generals might be a lot fucking worse though I'll give you that

As for this thread, I think /int/ should have language learning threads up more often, it's the reason I first even decided to come onto this board to begin with
>>69289107
People thinking that a language will get you a qt foreign bitty are a little deluded

If you can't get a qt in your own country speaking your native language you'll never land a qt speaking a foreign language in a foreign country. And if you do, it's likely you're being used or you're selling yourself short

I am, relationships just seem like added drama that I have enough of in my family anyway - plan has always been to move out and get settled and then go looking for a decent relationship

It's more just the social stigma, being at a party or just with mates and sort of left out of the conversation if they're talking about fucking, pretty rare but shitty when it happens. Have come to sort of embrace it and it's not so bad anymore; mates always make it their goal to wingman me though. I am half russian and speak basic to Intermediate russian already, so I am just fine tuning it.
As for Ukrainian it is quite similar to Russian in terms of syntax/grammar/pronunciation, so I basically just memorise vocabulary (which can be different).

As for French and Japanese, they are quite different Languages, so I don't get confused while studying both. Lately I have lacked motivation, but hopefully I will starte studying these Languages more seriously this coming year.

>Russian
Pros - very applicable across Eastern Europe, Baltic countries and of course Russia; Cyrillic alphabet looks really neat; rich culture that is really quite unknown/unexplored by most people in Western countries; very rare for an Australian to speak Russian so it could present some unique opportunities

Cons - All the places where it is applicable are in (for the most part) pretty grim circumstances, so travelling won't be as nice; the hardest of all the languages I'm considering so learning it will take a lot of time and effort; very rare for Russians to be in Australia so (in Australia) it will see very little practical use; have to learn to roll my fucking r's

>Spanish
Pros - apparently the easiest of the languages I'm considering to learn; the most applicable language as well, 400 million speakers world wide; spoken in half of South America which would be a beautiful place to travel, also spoken in Spain which would be equally amazing to travel; as it's the most widely spoken language of the lot it's a lot more likely to run into someone who speaks Spanish, still pretty rare in Australia I'd say; seeing as speaking a second language is sort of rare in Australia all together it is still somewhat unique to know Spanish; know pretty much nothing about Spanish history and learning a language comes hand in hand with learning history

Cons - a lot of people know Spanish so it's not as much of a useful skill when compared to say Russian; not quite sure but I think a fair amount of South America is pretty dangerous while travelling; doesn't have any neat looking alphabet, just English alphabet with accents; have to learn to roll my fucking r's
>>
>>69297978
Honestly those two languages are going nice together, a very common one, and a slightly more specific/exotic one.

It's what I'm going for as well, except I'm learning Italian before to overcome my psychological block on Spanish
>>
>>69297978
What about Italian? Did you already discard it?
>>
>>69297978
>Italian
Pros - a really nice sounding language; meant to be a bit more of a challenge than Spanish which is always nice; Italy is a beautiful country and would be nice to travel; makes you seem 'sophisticated'; pretty safe country to travel; people are apparently really nice/friendly; economy isn't too bad so it could be a viable place to find work once I have a degree (especially if it improves); Italian qts, I know there's also Russian and Spanish qts of course but I guess I just have a particular liking towards Italians, although thiccc Spanish girls are very close

Cons - the least applicable, pretty much only directly applicable to Italy or Italian people; has to be emphasised again, applicable to 40 million people vs Russia's ~200 million and Spanish's 400 million; again it's pretty rare to run into any Italians around Australia; like Spanish it has no neat looking alphabet, although it is a bit less vanilla compared to Spanish

>>69298080

>>
>>69298209
Well for me Italian is really easy, it's basically funny French, and takes little effort to learn, which is why I'm able to keep a steady pace with it.

Russian is much more difficult for me, even though I've spent a year in a Slavic country, but as you said it's much more useful.

I envy you Europeans who can speak pretty fucking well in English, of course knows the native tongue well, and then can usually learn the surrounding country'(s) language as it's closely related to your own; should've been born into a decent Euro country instead of satellite Britain which is slowly turning into mini-merica

I just recently passed my one-year anniversary of starting French.

Where should I be in terms of proficiency? I literally studied for at least two hours a day, every day since, but there came a point right around June where I felt as if I wasn't making much progress anymore. I still haven't missed a day of studying, though.

I can pretty much read Le Petit Prince without a dictionary, and L'étranger with minimal use of a translator. However, I still can't fucking understand spoken French, and going from English to French is still difficult. I took many unofficial proficiency tests, and I hover around A2-B1, somehow.

Fellow French learners, what can I do from here? What was your situation like after one year of learning?

It took me two years to get into b-1 level, at that time the progress becomes really slow in comparision to how it used to be. This situation is the worse because you start to feel discouraged as you're not a beginner anymore but the gap between your current level and somewhat decent is still large.
When it happened to me I tried to realise what were my worse capabilities and tackle them. Just like you, I simply couldn't understand neither spoken french nor speak it with fluidity despite being able to read it with no problems. What I did was to find someone to practise with through interpals and we spend 6 month talking twice a week for 2-3 hours. I also downloaded several musics in french and listened to them non stop, subcribed to some vlogs in Youtube and spent a hell lot of time watching the french Tv channel (TV 5 monde here) without subtitles and you can rewatch them all with subtitles in their site, which I also recommend.

Learn passively, almost unwillingly. It is the best method of learning. Akin to brainwashing. It is also the best method to completely incorporate the "turn into a sponge" principle.
At least in my experience.

Download the targeted language's movie, their most obnoxiously popular music. Close your eyes and let go. Whatever you pick up. Don't go concentrating or peeling your eyes and ears. Just relax. If it is a French movie, and you are a Spanish native speaker, imagine you're watching a Spanish movie and draw effortless parallels to vocabulary peculiarities. Imagine watching a SPANISH movie. Let go

If you're English, and you're learning German/Swedish/Norwegian, do the same. Have as much effortless "a ha" moments.
Slow down your media. Manipulate it. Slow down music to 0.5x, videos/movies as well. Make it a mocking context. You are more prone to memorizing something "extraordinary", comically sounding.

If you are learning a language not parallel to your own, but from a different branch, focus on the aforementioned paragraph. Manipulation of media, but not in search of similarities as a bedrock of your future knowledge, but sounds. Sounds that your brain (and it will be) is convinced are essential to recreate the language you are learning. You will notice them, after a day, or three days, just like a funny name of a celebrity, or a movie line yoh remembered two years ago. It will be stuck echoing in your brain

This will target your true motivation, clear out any doubts of whether you truly want to accept the knowledge, how you want to use it and whether it truly "sticks"/are you "talented" enough for it. Maybe the answer to the last one is a "no". Don't be doscouraged. Sometimes the key to learning one is repetition/learning of another. If you want to learn Swedish, for example, and you find it hard to assimilate the vowels, try skim-reading on Norwegian. Search for "weak entries". Every language family has a weak entry point

It's all in the unconscious.

>>
>>69302383
for some reason way too many people here pronounce th as s, when f comes closer if you really are too stupid to learn to pronounce the th sound.

the best example of an easy fix, though, is probably voiced consonants at the end of words. they're always unvoiced at the end of Dutch words (I think German does this too?). People with heavy Dutch accents therefore pronounce "bad" as "bat". same thing happens to b (p) and g (k). It's the easiest way to recognize Dutchmen speaking English.
>>
>>69302600
>th as s, when f comes closer
exact same thing in German

>always unvoiced at the end of Dutch words (I think German does this too?)
No, in German, not sure when, but sometime in the past the "Auslautverhärtung" happened,
basically means, all ending consonants will change pronunciation
(I think it's called aspirated, but I have no idea about all those linguistic terms)

here's the wikipedia article in dutchie

Mandarin grammar is highly analytic, meaning it's easy to "stack" or "compound", meaning it's relatively easy. It's their script and tonality that discourages the learners

I was only asking can you translate (for you) using a indirect object pronouns like te or le instead of using a preposition like para o por
for example:
Haz un hilo para mi o Hazme un hilo

I was living in Vienna, you'd think so, but so many people come from the countryside to university there and these were the people I was mostly hanging out with

Also, from personal experience i think that the biggest difficulties that an english speaker will have when pronouncing german will come from z (takes a lot of practice for an english speaker to say quickly), r (r in general basically doesn't exist in english), and umlauted vowels in combination with other vowels

Which Portuguese variation is more useful?
Brazilian Portuguese has the largest speaker in the world but Portuguese Portuguese is the standard Portuguese for everywhere except Brazilian.

Personally I find Brazilian Portuguese ugly but let's see utility here. (I'm not South American, just expat.)

yes, that's right.
Another example:

Quiero que me prepares un pastel = Quiero que prepares un pastel para mí

And if you want to emphasize to whom the action is being done you can say:
Quiero que me prepares un pastel para mí.

>>
>>69303473
Doesn't really matter which dialect you're learning. Usually the rules for European Portuguese are also applicable/correct here. The use of gerund for example, here we use the classical way " estou comendo " whilst in everywhere else they will say "estou a comer" the thing is albeit less used this last form is also correct here and it will be understood anyways.
Tbqh we speak the same language, most of our communication problems are due to the accent and a minor part is caused by lexical different ( same words, different meanings). If you want to learn Eu-Pt go for it, good luck finding resources though as most of them are in br accent.

I know a couple of people who have been here for about 10 years, one from Russia and one from Ukraine, and they still have some accent left. It's not like they are trying to retain their old accent. Not saying it's relevant just saying that it's applicable. What I mean by that is that you could go to some Eastern European countries and speak Russian and likely some 30+ year old would understand. They probably wouldn't like that you're speaking Russian but it would help you get by

>Fun fact: Lebanon has a pretty large francophone community and they use this tense in everyday conversations. Even french people sometimes can't understand them
Every French people know passé simple, so we would understand it without any problem.

We still use it in everyday conversation in some expressions, and people with higher education will use it even more.

You can avoid learning the most obscures subjonctive tenses, but you really should learn passé simple. Otherwise even children books will be unintelligible to you.

>How do you say "by"?
被 bei4
>And how do you say "would have... if..."?
tl;dr: 会…… ,如果……。

In more detail:
Although you CAN literally say "would have... if...", statistically it's way more common to say it the other way around: "if... would have...". Just a Chinese habit.
Also, Chinese doesn't make time distinctions in conditional clauses, so that literally saying "if you do that I'll hit you" can also mean "if you did that I would hit you", etc. (This explains why Chinese speakers use the wrong construction when learning a European language ALL THE TIME...)
Other than that, it is often done in a similar way to English. There's a word meaning "if" for the first part (neutral 如果 ru2guo3, informal 要是 yao4shi), and you can add 会 hui4 (traditional: 會) 'will, would, would have' in the second part.
However, it's also very common to not use any markers at all. This is similar to how in English we sometimes say "you do that, I (fucking) hit you", without an "if". Except that in Chinese this could also mean "if you had done that I would've hit you", because again, no time distinction in conditional constructions.
>>
>>69307345
Thanks, ill check it out.
>>
>>69307148
Is it really the case though? In Italy they decided to learn English instead of French, so nowadays old people still remember and can speak in French but young people only speak Italian because English is too foreign to them and they don't remember much.
>>
>>69307148
Well, not 70+, but 40+ maybe. And also almost all people in Belarus and Ukraine speak Russian fluently. Of course, if we talk about some other eastern European countries - Russian won't help a lot, that's true. But it's better than nothing, I think. And not so many people there are good in English. Sometimes Russian is more useful.

>What Arabic dialect should I learn
I've heard that Egyptian Arabic, thanks to producing quite a bit of media, is widely understood, more so than any other dialect. The problem then becomes trying to understand the other person (they're likely to know how to Egyptianize or standardize their speech quite a bit, but it's apparently still a bit of a problem).
Other than that it depends on what country you want to go to. If you like Tunisians, learn Tunisian, etc.

From the arabic.desert-sky.net guy (a very useful website if you want to learn Egyptian Arabic by the way) has as FAQ page that I'd recommend you to go through (including a couple paragraphs on choosing a dialect):
http://arabic.desert-sky.net/faq.html

>and where do I find material?
If you don't mind learning Arabic like an American in the navy would, you could try:
http://www.fsi-language-courses.net/fsi-arabic-language-courses/
(the "comparative" one includes some Egyptian)

There used to be a website where you could pirate a bunch of dialect materials, but it seems to be gone. ;_; And I just checked Library Genesis (gen.lib.rus.ec), and they don't actually have a lot of the PDFs the other guys used to have, including some I happened to have saved. Maybe I'll get around uploading them...

Thanks. I've watched a few Egyptian movies with English subtitles. I honestly only recognized a few words or sentences. I understand Classical/Standard Arabic when spoken either completely or I get the over all message.
