I'm from the north-east and our old dialect was very dutch-like. The bavarians are very close to the austrians; and the swabians and alemanians are more closely related to swiss germans.
That being said, as dialects are much less common today, it is for me easier to understand a swiss german than a dutch person. On the other hand, i am more likely to understand a little dutch, compared to a southerner.

Also I have German family and they 're pretty cool.

You can see it on companies like Audi or VW which were founded in East Germany and produced quality cars in the past. The restriction of most people's liberty made them left the country during this time and with them the knowledge. The city where I live had twice the citizens at 1945 than it is right now, it went from almost 900000 to 500000. It took a long time to get out of recesion after socialism was abolished and it will take a long time to get there again like it was before.

We don't have a House of Lords. There honestly is an absolute cult mentality that surrounds US Marines.
