Actually it was Iberians, the Spanish and the Portuguese, who first got started with that. The concept has it's roots in the Reconquista as the native Christians sought ways to diferentiate themselves from the Moorish invaders, afterwards in the conquest of the Americas the concept did once again become useful to diferentiate themselves not only from the natives but from the African slaves.
