Christmas eve is when all scandis celebrate christmas, that's why he brought it up. Of course the American didn't know of this and thus didn't associate any kind of importance with the current date.

On christmas eve you spend time with family, feast, dance and sing around the christmas tree, and exchange gifts.
People drink, but its with the family and is relatively quiet.

Potatoes, Brown potatoes (small and caramelized), sweet red cabbage, pork roast with the crispy skin, roast duck/goose with Apples and/or prunes baked inside it, fat gravy made from the fowl's fond, and Chips to dip in the sauce. My family also cook the innards.
For dessert people usually get "risalamande" which is essentially rice pudding with whipcream and hot cherry sauce.
It can vary though.
We have julbord on the 25th-29th depending on if you bother with it.

We have that too (ris à la Malta) but that's about the only thing we have in common it would seem. We eat ham, meatballs, small sausages (prinskorv) and a host of other small dishes.
