I live in Rome. It's a nice city rich in history but nothing else. There are Bangladeshi everywhere selling you shit, Africans (negroes and arabs) selling you fake shit, and others scum. Mafia isn't a problem because you will NEVER see anything. Sometimes Gypsies (Italian ones aka terroni and romanians/ romanian ones) could bother you, stealing your car/motorcycle/bicycle, pickpocketing. People are friendly, mostly they don't know English but someone does. You should live here at least 1year to decide by yourself
