Learning words in context is a lot better than learning them in a pre-made deck.

And also it'll make your 6k deck much easier as your words begin to overlap down the line.

He wanted to up his daily count, it's just easier and better to make a separate mining deck than it is to add 10 more new words per day in the 6k.

Learning Japanese is like climbing a very long staircase. If you try to do too much at the beginning, you won't have much energy and will be hurting later on trying to climb the very same number of steps the next day. It's not about how fast you can climb to "step number x" in the beginning, it's about being willing to climb a minimum number of steps everyday. Once you have turned it into a habit, climbing that minimum amount of steps becomes so much easier. Language learning is about being consistent in the end.

The Japanese have a saying: 七転び八起き 「ななころびやおき」 "Fall down 7 times, get up 8"

Don't be afraid to make mistakes! The worst you'll do is fall over, but you can always pick yourself back up. Beginners often start learning the language full of fire and determination, but quickly fizzle out due to fear of making mistakes. Look forward to making mistakes and learning from them instead. Even if climbing just a few steps feels painful, difficult, slow going and unsatisfying in the beginning, if you always stick it out, every day it becomes easier, and you definitely will achieve your goals!

i havent gotten too far into grammar yet, but i keep seeing example sentences where the furigana doesnt match the pronunciation or kanas given

空く
レストランは空すいていまし

空くis pronounced すく and its used in that sentence without the く and pronounced just す. It makes sense in that regard but why does it still mean the same thing, am i always going to see it by itself or is that くsuppose to indicate something else? There are a few other example sentences that do that as well and i would like to know before i run into any more.
>>
>>69030034
We've already had this discussion before, バーガー君
>>
>>69030050
A kanji has multiple readings, the okurigana (this ku is one) indicate it's a specific verb with a specific reading. If it was just 空, it could very well have been pronounced kara, kuu, sora etc.

What you overlooked, though, is the -te form of a -ku verb is -ite. So "suku" became "suite".
Read some Tae Kim.

(I hope I understood your question right, I'm assuming the sentence you pasted has the kanji and furigana overlapping).
>>
>>69030050
空く (す・く) is a verb
Verbs ending in ~く are conjugated as ~いて in the て-form
>>
>>69030463

i didnt know about the conjugation part im still at the start of genki i dont think thats been introduced yet

>>69030437

I believe that answers my question anki gives it to me like that because they want that one reading of it to come out and then to define that one reading. In the sentence they put the furigana as su- and followed it with -ite because of the conjugation

Yeah they're just being asshats. Genki is slow-paced, and if you bought it, you wasted your money because you can self-learn everything in that book in like a month.

Read Tae-Kim, it's everything Genki is but you don't have to read retarded ass stories and you'll actually learn Japanese this century.
>>
>>69031664
>I imagine it sucks when English speakers learn it.
Why do people insist that english natives have more difficulty learning other languages?
>>
>>69031664
Not really. It's a pretty straight forward process.

Try learning declensions in Latin.
>>
>>69032199
Because English speaking natives are often stupid. But for real I don't know.
>>
>>69032199
Because they do, if only because they are not forced to learn the lingua franca of the world and thus statistically less people get involved with language study.

Besides, verb conjugation is barely a concept in English, so there's that. For Romance speakers the jap conjugation system is quite a walk in the park.

Everybody who went to uni had to use Genki at first.

Language acquisition isn't just a general knowledge of abstract grammar points. You have to do slow and laborious things when just starting, including drills and reading. That's why a full-on coursebook makes sense.

I could read every example sentence tagged N1 on Jgram in a day, but that wouldn't make me N1 level.

I admit I don't know enough about the internet/4chan to know why or how you're posting with a Japanese flag when you clearly don't know anything about learning Japanese, but w/e.

I'll just say this: fuck Genki. I spent a single month learning Japanese before I bought Genki I and I gotta say, when I finally got it 2 weeks later, I skipped right to the back of the book and read the little outro letter it puts in to test you on what you learned. I could understand 90% of it.

Pic related, do it.

Fuck Genki. Fuck you. You're a retard.
>>
>>69045431
I have never read genki, but maybe that one month and a half that you spent not reading it was enough to teach you basic grammar? Genki is a textbook for beginners, afterall. Well, even if you think genki is terrible, I'd at least use it for reference whenever I don't understand a certain piece of grammar, if it's decent enough for that. I don't understand why you bought it in the first place. PDF files are really easy to find, you could have at least tried it first digitally.

While it's true that a lot of /a/ users would have consuming native media in mind, he still has a point. Generally, grammar drills and such early on aren't all that helpful - you don't have much of a frame of reference yet and it makes an odd foundation.

Reading and absorbing more grammar and everyday language passively lays a better foundation than running through drills. By actually experiencing the language, your brain is better able to make the abstract connections it needs to. Regurgitating / memorizing grammar rules will help slightly in the beginning, but to really "get" the grammar, you have to put in the time via experiencing it.

It's the same reason why native speakers would NEVER make the same types of mistakes learners would - massive exposure. It doesn't hurt to look up grammar rules initially to speed up the process, but drilling them is sort of excessive and your time is better spent elsewhere.

Sometimes I make up words combining kanjis at streams and japs read it live. They will try one or two different readings, and then move on, because the meaning has been figured anyway.

Recently I've even used the wrong kanji for an actual verb and the jap read it how I intended to write it without skipping a beat.

>>69039575
>Yes?
Not an actual question.

>>69039758
In a sense, English is the same. You don't know "read" and "read" have different pronunciations by just looking at text. Same for Kansas and Arkansas.
English speakers know it because they've heard it before, and you will start getting that ability as you meet more and more words.
Besides, the reason some words have many kanji versions or more than one way of reading it is because nips weren't sure about the correct usages.

There is no roundly agreed upon approach to anything regarding language acquisition, only a bunch of highly vocal and obnoxious anons who keep projecting their opinions upon the rest of the thread. What "DJT 101" means changes every handful of months.
>>
>>69048436
I'm not a uni dropout. I'm going to uni to learn something useful whereas Japanese you can learn fine on your own. If you think otherwise then you probably don't have the mental capacity to learn Japanese in the first place even if you go to your uni classes. You should probably give up now.

True, but learning on- and kun-yomi readings for individual kanji only works if you have legit autism. I would think it's safe to say that learning readings via vocab is DJT 101.

Nah, you're just being too relativistic.

There are three things everyone here seems to agree upon:
- Read kanas before anything;
- Flashcards;
- Learn readings through vocabulary.

There are several other advices that might be considered "highly vocal", like doing Core or skipping it, mining, studying radicals, ankidroning or reading from the get-go, compelling content or "Manga is not reading", but all of them face opposition.

Never seen anyone object to the aforementioned items though. Anyone?

You just stated things I agree with. And going to a uni class to do those things is wasteful.

Just because some dipshits hate anki or for some reason think going to classes makes reading useless doesn't mean there's not a consensus. Consensus =/= unanimous decision.

Everything has and does. Just like you there are other incredulous anons who react with a sense of "what the fuck" disbelief when coming across someone who has a different opinion, approach, beliefs, etc.
Bit of a shame they tend to also be the loudest anons. The thing about common sense, as an anon earlier brought up, is that most people assume their opinions are both common and sensible, despite this not really being the case most of the time.

>>RTK

These have genuine, bonafide, legitimate opposition. Anyone who disagrees can only either be new or be on the receiving end of the arguments against these things.

- RTK is litearlly a direct downgrade to most of the kanji resources that came after it
- The DoJG deck (not DoJG) was maintained by an idiot for a long time, and only recently reached a point where the *genuine* parts of the opposition against it don't apply anymore.
- Genki has genuine opposition. Yes, there are people that genki is good for, and there is illegitimate opposition against them, but the *genuine* part of the opposition against genki doesn't apply to the minority that genki is good for.
- Wanikani costs three digits USD before it takes you to a legitimate level and is strictly inferior to the free alternatives. The only reason to use it is if you literally need to be spoonfed.

Hey DJT do you think I can pass N3 next summer or winter?

I'm 10 months in, but had to lower cards in core multiple times cause my job kept me busy, so I'm at around 2500 cards now + 200 from my mining deck.
I started reading recently and while it's very very hard for me I can't deny that I'm improving.

Let's say I kept going at this speed, do you think I can pass N3?
I did the examples on the homepage and I failed hard at the listening exercises.
>>
>>69061002
>Hey DJT do you think I can pass N3 next summer or winter?
>I'm 10 months in
Sure. If you dedicate the next 6 months to reading shitloads of VNs, NEET-style, you will be an N1 reader at the end of it. Then you can dedicated 4 months to filling in the gaps and increasing your listening capacity.

>Let's say I kept going at this speed, do you think I can pass N3?
I don't know how fast you're going, but if you read a lot and study anything you're having problems acquiring naturally, you *can* get there in such a span of time.

>I did the examples on the homepage and I failed hard at the listening exercises.
Listening is mostly pattern recognition. The balance the JLPT gives between listening and reading is biased towards listening since spoken language is natural and functional literacy is optional, which is perfectly reasonable for them to do. As such, you need to overshoot the JLPT if you want to pass the listening sections. Try VNs and anime, they (when applicable) have professional voicing that will make it easier to pick up the patterns of spoken japanese without having to worry so much about weird pronunciations. Once you're good enough at recognizing speech patterns (fluently, not borderline), parsing pronunciation differences will be a lot easier.

If I create a new folder and move all of these uploaded folders into that folder, will it change the already created download links? I don't really want to change them if possible, that would fuck around with the anon who has already made changes to the CoR.

Oh, and happy holidays for yesterday/today for any of you fags who celebrate that shit. Drink up, for it's the 日本道.

Can't you test that pretty easily? Upload some random crap, get the link to it, move it, then try to access the link again. If it works, it means links stay valid. If not, I guess you're screwed.

Considering even literally retarded people know some basic language skills, not much? It's more an issue of patience and perseverance than of talent, really.

To normies however, you MUST be super intelligent if you learned those strange moon runes. I take it you're of the same opinion and never tried to learn another language before?
>>
>>69085793
Intelligence is just how fast you pick up on things. While high intelligence would make it a lot easier, its not necessary.
>>
>>69085910
Nah I tried learning Italian because I had an Italian friend. All I ever managed was quite a few nouns
>>
>>69085973
What >>69085962
said is pretty accurate; even the slowest learner will become fluent one day if they stick with it.

There are definitely better and worse ways to go about learning it, but in the end it comes down to perseverance. If you have the ability to endure the language long enough that your brain becomes used to it and it finally makes sense.
>>
>>69085973
Sounds to me like you didn't really care about/had little to interest in learning the language.
Learning languages successfully is all about motivation and putting in the time.

>>
>>69086131
Writing is a different skill than reading. A little practice and it should be easy enough.

That goes for kanji as well, there are only so many different strokes / radicals to learn, it repeats a lot so it's not that hard.
>>
>>69086131
Do you practice writing them or do you only use flash cards?
>>
>>69085793
>How great a factor is intelligence when it comes to learning [x]

Intelligence is not your ability to learn a thing, it's how fast you learn it. There are monkeys on the island of Madagascar that take years to figure out how to crack open seed pods with a rock and eat the innards. Years. To use a rock.

But they do it. They're dumb as fuck, but they do it.

If you're not smart, just work harder. I'm not a good athlete, but that doesn't mean if I don't train for years on end in boxing I won't beat your ass in a fist-fight. Same thing applies to traditional intelligence. I can be smart as a whip, but if you've been diligently studying Japanese for 5 years you're going to be better at it than I am.

Also, the meme about children learning faster/better than adults is just that: a meme. Anyone that thinks some ADHD children can learn a language better or faster than an adult is a retard.

Children seem to be better at it because we have low expectations of them. Of course if you're exposed to a language for all your waking hours for 5+ years, you're going to pick up on it.

Also, where children have to use brute force memorization, adults can use abstract reasoning, not to mention the ability to be far more patient. Recess is a thing in lower grades for a reason.
>>
>>69086307
Exactly. I'd like to see a 6 year old articulate in the foreign language they learned since Kindergarten compared to an adult that spend 4-6 hours a day learning it for 12 months.

How much vocab do I need before I can understand talk shows like アメトーク and shit? I just want to understand them but there's too many words I don't know. I have ~6200 words in anki and I feel like I would need double to even understand 70% of what is being said
>>
>>69086407
Understanding spoken shit is way harder because you have to take it all in and interpret it in your brain at a rapid pace. Even if you did know {arbitrary number} words, it would be difficult for you, probably.

It might help to see if you can find a source about a similar topic / similar style that has a script if you want to just hunt down more words to study.
>>
>>69086407
6200 is nothing lol. You've finished core6k and just started mining, basically. Once you know 20k words it will be better.

>>69086544
I stopped core6k at 2k words in. And obviously it will be better at 20k words

When can I start watching raw anime? Should I start now just trying to do it even if I don't get most of it?

I've been learning japanese for a year. It's really hard to undrestand spoken japanaese. I can understand most things if they are written down though. Sometimes I understand a whole scene and it's an amazing feeling but usuall ythere are too many words that I don't know and spoken too fast. If it's written down I can look up the words I don't know.

Should I watch kids stuff first instead of favorites like Serial Experiments Lain?
>>
>>69086662
Are you watching anime with japanese subs? Do that until you start feeling comfortable with it, and continue studying separately, until you have a decently large vocabulary.

Switching to raw anime w/o subtitles will always be hard, even if you are able to follow with japanese subtitles, so at one point you'll just have to do it even if seems hard. Just start watching anime with simple vocabulary (stuff like SoL) and gradually delve deeper into series with more obscure vocabulary.

It's really interesting how different people have different problems with kanji discerning. Those were never a problem to me because of the "half square" against the "full square" thing, but I did have a couple months of struggle between 使用 and 作用, because of the イ thing. Nowadays I don't get them wrong anymore and the difference seems too obvious, but I believe it was a matter of not being able to tell the individual kanji meaings apart back then, both being related to use/make/affect.

You should probably get some casual speaking experience? (not sure what the problem is exactly) before you try to correct natives on their English usage, especially on a place as laid back as 4chan.

In casual speech, statements are very often made with a rising intonation, either as a rhetorical question or the speaker questioning their own information / expressing slight doubt about it. The question mark indicates this.

The uncanny thing about bruteforcing vocabulary is the ability to ballpark a kanji's reading even when you have no idea what it means.

Is there a rule of thumb guide to which parts dictate sound in Japanese, or is it too all-over-the-place for that? At least on-yomi must still carry some of that.

Just a recommendation to anyone with a hacked 3DS (or a JP 3DS). Download Megami Meguri from the Free Shop, it's also free to play for JP 3DS owners. It has optional micro-transactions but the big draw is as follows.

It's simple dice rolling travel board game where you can travel to over 9000 real stations around japan. Travel across stations with your virtual Waifu as she trains to become a goddess. Everything she says is fully voiced because of the speech engine by Toshiba, which means it's great for listening. The game is entirely Kanji with no distracting furigana.

She asks you questions, such as what you like, what you've done, or where you've gone. She might ask what kind of hair length you like (and change her hair accordingly), or ask your favourite food then bring it up in future conversation. There's mini games, and other shit you can do with her, but it's great reading, listening, and conversing so if you don't mind her voice, give it a go.
