Uh no, being colonized by different countries is in fact a major difference, one that sprouted differences of culture, holidays, values, etc. Arizona, New Mexico, Chihuahua, Coahuila, etc. basically had no population until very late in both countries' histories. Sparse Catholic missions spread the value of Christianity to these barren places, but beyond that, they were a dead zone that insulated both countries from each other.

Unlike say, Belgium's proximity to France (especially Paris), which put it in the French sphere of influence very easily.

We have more in common with New Zealand and Australia than we do Mexico. And obviously Canada, in which three stars align: same original colonizer (Britain), same competing colonizer (France), very close proximity (most of their population lives within 50km of the US border).
