All the foreigners I've taken to sauna have had at least a towel around their waist, and so did I at that time. But normally, no robes nor rags.

Being nude with others has nothing to do with it, it's all about the Sauna and bathing being a comfy thing.

The traditional Finnish Sauna and the traditional Japanese Onsen are very close to each other both physically and spiritually. I have a fair amount of experience from both.

They are not for fighting nor sexual encounters. Especially latter one is, I think, a complete product of other cultures where the idea of common male and female nakedness Of Course leads to somekind of sexual encounter, or at least to a homotic dick measuring contest.

Its common, even in some public saunas.
Those are kinda rare though.

Its most common amongst family and friends.
Usually women and children go first, enjoy the sauna while its not quite so hot.

Then the men have a turn while it has been heated up by the previous users.

At least that is the norm with my family and friends. There might be exceptions though

Yes. In my university, our department frequently organizes sauna evenings. We have access to three different locations where the actual saunas can take 75 Finns, or 30 foreigners. This is not a joke, unfortunately.

Obviously no foreign exchange student is never forced to go to sauna, because it's quite clear it's not like shotgunning a beer or Drink Drink Drink.

Some of them will eventually go for it. Some of them seem to feel extremely liberated like a newborn atheist (which is honestly a bit awkward), but most of them really look like they have just dropped off some unnecessary baggage. Because it simply wasn't anything bad.
