Just because they are more successful now doesn't mean the help wasn't mutual. We were in a riskier spot, so we had less opting-out to do, but both countries benefited greatly from the alliance.

It's not a commie pact, you don't have to compare both countries' statuses to each other and make sure both got to the same economical point, you just have to compare them to what they would've otherwise been without it, and both England and Portugal would've been worse without the alliance.

I would bet that Portuguese people actually would prefer a Spaniard before a british, and I would even bet a british would prefer a Spaniard before a portuguese.
