Is there some feature in Anki that would let me add a new card to my reviews when I see it, but not count towards my new cards for the day? For example, if I have a word that is pretty easy, such as a katakana english loan word or a fairly simple combination of words I already know, but I still want to review it just in case, but I don't want it to eat into my actual new words for the day. Or would I just have to go into the settings and increase the new cards and then return them to normal once I'm done?

I just finished today's reviews so I can't test it out, but can you do this in the middle of your reviews so that the extra new cards appear with the regular ones, as opposed to all at the end?

Yes. Unless you have the "show new cards after reviews" setting of course.

Well, I have made 4 images that have been used as OP images since the /a/ ban, one of them being /jp/ exclusive. Maybe that's what you're referring to?
Now if you're asking about /a/ era OP images, I have nothing to do with them.

Anyway, if you don't follow both threads, you are missing out on the true premium DJT experience only DJT can offer you.
>>
>>68967461
Seconded, I like going on both threads. I come here to talk about the japanese language and language learning strategies in general, and I go to the /jp/ DJT to see 12 year old autist weebs sperging out about petty bullshit like people posting the wrong anime pics or god forbid people asking language learning related questions on a fucking thread that calls itself the Daily Japanese Thread.
>>
>>68967350
still a baby
but is it a normal retention rate? or is it below average?
>>
>>68967762
That's pretty much it.
I have noticed from all walltexts I've written since the /jp/ split, only one happened over there, since there doesn't seem to be enough space for any discussion to get momentum without being shat on dinosaurically.

Just hope we're able to keep some "cultural identity" here - their full-on assburgers may be amusing, but it's a nice immune system. The /int/ branch lacks a bit on that self-preservation instinct.
>>
after all is said and done, I visit this thread about as often as I did on /a/, that's to say hardly ever

Are you a masochist?

The original thread was hard enough to follow with its' 11-12 years of easily explained bullshit.

Come up with something new or go back to /x/.

Back then it was still season 1, where we only had the friendly guy who likes to sleep with you and the romantic girl who is on her period, with a very few rare exceptions of a second female voice here and there.

The robot one is unique. Not even the +100dB 万歳 or 一体 audios got me by surprise like that.

>>
would it be a good idea to turn off the furigana for the sentences?
>>
>>68969754
Yes. I run two sentences on the back of my cards. The raw sentence up the top (for reading) and the furigana version down the bottom (for troubleshooting).
>>
>>68969754
Yes. The sooner the better.
Even if you forget how some characters are even read aloud, if you recognize the meaning you will be ok. That's actually more important. The readings will come with time.
>>
>>68969898
>Even if you forget how some characters are even read aloud, if you recognize the meaning you will be ok. That's actually more important.
So long as you only think of the meaning in English that might be true.

>>
>>68970006
>meaning in Engllish
Not necessarily. Sometimes I have more trouble thinking of an equivalent term in English/Portuguese for a card than to actually recalling it's meaning.

After a while you start to get a pictorial sixth sense, it's pretty cool.. I feel like I can even start making my own words by mix-and-matching!
>>
>>68970006
how would knowing the reading change this?

obviously when studying any second language you don't map words 1:1 to your native tongue
>>
>>68970051
>After a while you start to get a pictorial sixth sense
Yes I love this

When I study new vocabulary I don't actually really think about the English meaning of the word at all. That's already inherently baked into the kanji 99% of the time. I just focus on remembering the reading
>>
That was the most hellish session of Anki I've ever had. I just did not feel like doing it at all, and as such I was stuck in a loop going through the last 20 words over and over for about 40 minutes.
That single handedly almost makes me want to just outright quit, but maybe it was a 1 off. I sure as hell hope it is anyway.
>>
>>68970102
>>68970054
>I just focus on remembering the reading
That's what I do as well, and why I think the reading is most important. The meaning is "inherently baked" into the sound of the reading just as much as it is baked into the kanji. The reading is the word itself, while the kanji is only a representation of the word on a screen or page.
>>
anyone know good exercises/ways on studying hiragana/katakana? i am writing them down and remembering the sounds/how they are pronounced and using kanateacher but i feel that is not enough.

ive heard its good to write words with using the kana you remember but how do i do this without even knowing basic jap vocab?
>>
>>68970182
keep ur chin up hon

remember to stay hydrated and don't do reps on an empty stomach

if you're having trouble with a word look up some sentences that contain it. remembering vocab in isolation is difficult. I find I'm waay more likely to forget a word that I first encountered in a precompiled deck than I am a vocab I caught in the wild and added to a deck manually. because there's no context for the former
>>
>>68970254
don't study the kana without a textbook.

for japanese/arabic/russian sometimes they just teach you the alphabet first but that's dumb.

just read genki. IIRC the very first words/grammar are romanized but it switches over to kana quickly enough. that's much more sensible than studying symbols in isolation
>>
>>68970182
That can happen if you're tired.

I had to start taking naps when I get off work because the fatigue fries my brain and fucks with my retention.
Just remember, if you're feeling ill or whatever it's better to turn off/reduce new cards than to skip a session. Setting a precedent is not something you want to do early on.
>>
>>68970182
Study in small sessions of 15 minutes each throughout the day, you are clearly one of these ADHD-crippled cyberkiddos.

>>68970254
Karaoke. Don't you know some weeb songs you can sing from heart? I knew a lot of them back when I knew only romaji. They were a great way to exercise kanas without a vocabulary.
>>
>>68970299
>>68970259

It's the review cards that kill me for the most part. Is it normal to get like 80ish cards to review each session? Just feels like too much each day.

And yeah, I am tired as hell which is no doubt why that was so agonizing.
>>
>>68970294
what kind of textbooks? i am using tae kim, as the guide suggested. what makes genki any different? i would like to hear other opinions.

>>68970303

>>
>>68970343
>Is it normal to get like 80ish cards to review each session?
Yes of course.

I deliberately try to ensure at least 100 a day (and that's before my review of the forgotten cards). some people do far more

But if it's too much for you then it's too much. There's zero shame in taking at your own pace. Just set it to show you less reviews a day.
>>
>>68970346
tae kim is just a laundry list of grammar and assumes you know the alphabet, which you clearly don't

genki is a textbook for people with zero japanese experience and starts off with roman characters so that when you do learn the alphabet (very soon) you can write actual words and sentences with it

tae kim should be considered harmful at this point. I don't know why some guy's blog is recommended over actual uni coursebooks
>>
>>68957313
Why do customer service Japanese women smile at me when I say Konnichiwa back to them when they greet me? J-men don't say anything and basically ignore them. I'm pretty I have perfect pronunciation so It's not that - do they think it's cute? I'm pretty attractive desu.

so i download the genki books (is it a lot?)

by then i would have memorized the hiragana and kana, yes? and then i move on to tae kim, and as i study tae kim i do the kanji remembering stuff everyone else is doing. is this a good plan?

how long will it take me to finish genki on average?
>>

>>
How do I remove the furigana from the sentences in the core 2k/6k deck? Even if I remove the furigana, the [reading] shows up beside the kanji so it looks even worse.

>>68970049
>>
>>68970475
There's just two volumes. I think they just take you to around N4 level or so? You'd have the whole phonetic alphabet, a couple hundred kanji, and survival level Japanese.

I wouldn't bother with Tae Kim personally. I'd use the Kanzen Master series after getting the basics out of the way, but we're getting ahead of ourselves.

>>
>>68970383
I thought the number of reviews per day would eventually settle to around 10 times the number of new cards per day?

>>68970565

maybe? I haven't done the math

I find my limit is something like 200 a day, which happened when I was doing a full RTK chapter every day.

Introducing 20 vocab words a day puts me around ~100-120

I'm polishing off my N2 deck before downloading the N1 one and it's around 60 a day

小説とライト in AZW3 format, seems to have a bunch from the dead links page on the CoR. Found them on a hard drive after making some space and checked out of curiosity if they were the same as what is already up only to find a few of them being listed as dead links.
List of contents:
http://pastebin.com/XFs17zrT

All uploaded in archived folders for individual series, containing AZW3 files. The files were last modified in late 2015 so perhaps I downloaded them from the CoR before they were removed from their mega accounts.

What the fuck is wrong with you /int/ djt? Recommending genki is maybe understandable if you really hate weeb media, but limiting reviews? If you limit reviews your spacing will be disrupted and the backlog will just get worse and worse, this is elementary shit that we have known for years.
At any given time most of your reviews will be new cards from the previous several days, so the answer if you are being overwhelmed is still to cut down on new cards.

That's why as you move further along in your studies and expand your vocabulary, you begin to pepper your flashcards with notes like "(ぎょ in ぎょぎょう)" so you don't waste time trying to remember which one was "fishing" (漁) and which one was "angling" (釣).

There's a pretty ridiculous number of characters related to confinement, imprisonment, and jails. Like 5 or 6 different kanji that he gives synonyms. No way you can differentiate between them all with just his keywords 1-2 years down the line. I don't think there's any shame in mixing them up in Anki. All that matters is you recognize the concept when reading actual Japanese.

Download Core30k and see how it fares on the kanji grid thing.

My vocabulary in both Portuguese and English is around the 25k mark, and that doesn't stop me from finding new words in an almost daily basis.

If you are reading, that's bound to happen. If you just browse the Internet, not so much. Maybe the solution is to stop learning!

Started 379 days ago, studied for 293 hours in Anki for a total of 7308 words and 1653 kanji.

I can read yonkomas and get the gist of things when people post miscellaneous raw pages here.
I can write and be understood by natives, although I need some Google Translate or Jisho help with correctly interpreting answers.

I can watch TV shows aimed at kids and even though I can't into grammar, I can watch subbed (English) anime and recognize a fat majority of the words being said in Japanese.

What I am most proud of is not having missed a single Anki day in over 10 months.

What I am most regretful about is not having finished Tae Kim yet.

But yeah, I'm pretty proud of my progress. I had an epiphany about 1 year ago that I could learn 80% of the language in less than an year (that 20:80 rule pseudoscience thing) and get kanji out of the way in less than 2 years.

So that's what I'm focusing on. Any grammar/production is just extra profit, as I don't have much time to dedicate to Nippongo every day.

Most people here accumulate more reviews than they can review in a timely manner, getting all the context they had learned in the manga long-forgotten before the card even comes to the top of the deck.

I recommend having a goal:
>Today I will mine 20 new words!
That way you will mine sparingly, judging whether they are necessary and build your own "core" vocabulary, keeping examples fresh and approachable.

Of course you may go overboard and get 25~30 if you're feeling sporty that day, just make sure your reviews are done shortly after the mining, without incrementally increasing this interval between mining and studying by piling up more than you can chew.
>>
>>68993898
Just keep a notepad file of them and stick the ones that seem important to the top of the file so that they'll be the first ones you add when you run out of new cards.
>>

Mine anything with a non-obvious reading. Ignore things with obvious readings (but perhaps less obvious meanings) until you have seen it a few times without getting it, or until anki time is insignificant and you might as well just add anything new you come across.

What do you mean by "obvious" readings? Can you give an example?

Also 20-25 words a day is frighteningly slow. With a pre-made deck 20 words a day can be painful, but I find with mining decks even 50 new words a day isn't that much of a chore, since the word sticks out more because you read it in context.

most of these barely have anything in common with the function of the japanese type of particles
>>
>>68999226
In romance languages, prepositions are mandatory to change the grammatical behavior of the phrase they introduce. In languages with particles, the particles aren't mandatory to change the grammatical behavior of the phrase they introduce. For example, many japanese particles such as を and の can be dropped entirely in some contexts, with their presence marking emphasis rather than behavior; and english has the same selective level of control on the use of particles like "to", "not" and "of".

>>
>>68999758
Example for not:

In "I'm not hungry", the "not" logically binds to "I'm" instead of "hungry". This would be completely impossible for a preposition, which is strictly the syntactical head of the prepositional phrase it introduces ("I'm up" -> "I'm [up here]" not "[I'm up] (and my being up is happening over here").

Examples for "to":

"Wanna go home" is syntactically equivalent to "Want to go home", and shows that "to" cannot be an integral part of a hypothetical prepositional phrase "to go home".

The ability to lack "to" entirely shows up more explicitly in formal english grammar, when "bare infinitives" are used in unusual grammatical moods, such as in "If he would go home". Here, "would" is a modal verb, which is definitely not a preposition or a particle because it's an introflection of "will", so "would go home" cannot be analyzed as a prepositional phrase and "go home" cannot be analyzed.

There's also normal grammar where the bare infinitive shows up like "I made him go home", but I wanted to mention the formal grammar first.

Interestingly, in some dialects of english, the particle "to" forces its way into situations where the bare infinitive is usually used, like "I made him go home" turning into "I made him to go home". In normal english, this would have a different meaning. It shows that "to" has unstable syntax semantics in the english psychogrammar, which is likely for a particle but not a preposition.

Example for "of":

The phrase "lotta stuff" is syntactically equivalent to "lot of stuff", but the nexus of identity is ambiguous. "A lot of stuff" both "is stuff" and "is a lot", and can only be "of stuff" or "a lot of" once you arbitrarily (or contextually) select a single nexus as solitary. With a preposition, there is only one option for the nexus of identity of the phrase: the entire prepositional phrase.

>Pick better examples, because what you said is right.
If you're allergic to contractions, you could look at things like "do things you want to" or "something I want a lot of", which use relative clause word order magic to delete the supposed prepositional phrase. This isn't as compelling to me as my other argument, though.
>>
>>69000633
> What about the meaning of the word? Or does that just come more naturally as you progress further?

You'll get a lot of the meanings naturally as you read and look words up. At least, a lot more easily than you will get readings. You worry about the meanings that you missed when you aren't as stressed out and aren't naturally coming across more words per day than you can do in anki.

I think we are a real DJT thread by now

I started in 2014. I studied for a year. Then I went to the hospital and stopped studying for a year. Then I started again last week. 20 new cards a day, mined from manga. But I'm actually adding 50-100 per day because I've been reading for hours. Surprisingly I remember enough to be able to read even though I gave up for a year. This time I will stay strong and focused and try not to get sick again.

I used to be able to read manga without a dictionary but now I have to use a dictionary. ;_; I'm surprised I remember so much though.
>>
>>68984288
19k here. Eventually you'll reach the point where you can't find the new words in a dictionary either, either because they're very obscure and the only definition you can find is in Japanese on some niche website or they're just some pun on another word the author made up.

At this point I kind of feel Anki has outgrown its usage. I doubt I'll keep going until 25k.

I add everything that I don't already know.

It's a bit annoying though, because there are lot sof words that I know that aren't in anki so I can't use anki to measure my vocab or kanji knowledge. But if I added absolutely everything it would water everything down with easy shit.

>>

The problem with anki addiction is you're overvaluing "knowing" vocabulary over just exposure, when exposure is actually really important. You have to read enough to see everything multiple times before you really get it. Otherwise you just end up doing anki forever.

And like, even if it's slightly less efficient, would you rather learn Japanese in 1000 hours of anki or in 200 hours of anki and 1300 hours of compelling content? If you're learning Japanese for compelling content anyways why not just go directly for the goal? You want to read those things anyway right? And you need to read a lot anyway to see the words in enough contexts to be able to use them properly.

The only reason I can see to be an anki addict is if the only material you find compelling is something like manga that does not allow easy lookups of new words.

>>
>>69011381
Compelling content is not an universal rule.

There is nothing more compelling to me than knowing my kanji count is one step closer to completion (applies to joyo/jinmeiyo only).
That would require 10000000000000 hours of reading, but 500 hours of Anki will already get you covered on the joyo..
>>
>>69011601
Class is a waste of time unless you really need your hand held, but if so you probably will never learn to a good level.
>>
>>69011381
I don't consider myself an Anki addict though, once I get past the minimum number of vocab to feel comfortable, I'll leave my Anki in limbo.

Don't get me wrong though, I completely understand the value of exposure, but exposing (i.e. 90% exposure, 10% anki) myself at such an early stage leaves me with too many unknown vocabulary to feel comfortable.

Try visiting koohii, there you'll find the true Anki addicts.

>oh wait, there's still ~45min of Anki, Memrise and Duolingo to get out of the way
While it's true that Anki ends up being a monkey on your back when you're far enough into learning the language, it also serves as a hedge against forgetting it.
At times when I was too busy or disengaged to enjoy raw content, daily reps maintained a sort of continuity that let me get back to reading or watching stuff without feeling too out of shape to tackle it immediately.
>>
>>69011638
>That would require 10000000000000 hours of reading, but 500 hours of Anki will already get you covered on the joyo..

Then just add words with new kanji to anki. I got 3400 kanji and only like 100 hours in anki. It doesn't take 500 hours to learn a few kanji.

>>69011708
>12000 words in anki

Seriously it doesn't take that much to get high coverage. The problem is you're probably learning tons of useless shit because you're not mining. You should be well at the point where you can watch a couple episodes of drama and not come across more than 30 new words.

I see. It's a lot to have though, like there's no way it's good to go through all of that.

>mined sentences
Worthless, if you do sentences do them with subs2srs (or just making audio files yourself) for listening practice and forcing you to actually learn them.
>>
>>69011770
>probably learning tons of useless shit because you're not mining

I mine my vocab and kanji occasionally, but the thing is it can get tedious at times because most of the time the vocab I come across already exists in my vocab deck, all I have to do is to reposition the card. Doing that every time, everyday can be time consuming.

If there is some automated way to automatically reposition my cards based on some clicks from Yomichan or Rikaican plugins, I'd gladly switch to pure mining. I suggested something like this to the guy who programmed Yomichan but he ignored my suggestion.
>>
>>69011874
By mined sentences, I'm referring to decks I made using subs2srs

Doing RTK. The number of new characters varies heavily day to day.
Today was 17. Yesterday was 43 I think.

I need to start doing what that guy suggested and cram study 14-day reviews of forgotten cards.
A lot of it is down to Heisig's stupid keywords though. "admonish", "chastise" and "rebuke" were all in the same lesson yesterday.
>>
>>69015790
It's good that you're doing a full lesson a day. I think that's important.

Even if you don't do one everyday, when you do sit down with a chapter it's good to get it done in one setting since they're all thematically linked.

I'm afraid the English synonyms are something you just have to suffer through at first. You'll come to realize that a lot of them are constituent parts of the same kanji compounds, which is why they have interchangeable English associations.

Thanks. I somewhat suspected that might be the case.

Anyway I intend to continue taking one lesson per day, because there are 56 lessons and 2 months was my target for hitting the 2000 mark in core6K; marking the point at which I wanted to start reading/vocab mining.
However that many failures suggests maybe I should take a day off every 2 weeks and just review shit (comprehensively); might help retention, and will also put me neatly at the 2 month mark.
>>
>>69016121
Because it's still early, that many forgotten words is fairly normal, especially with the amount you're learning. The key to SRS is remembering when forgetting, in theory those ones you forgot will have stronger memories than the ones you remembered.

If you've got the time, try doing more cram study. If you've got the balls, the 14 day cram might be up your ally. (I'm trying the 7 day cram because I'm a fucking pussy and it's still a lot of words.)
>>
>>69016209
Forgetting so many is particularly shameful because I did Kanjidamage a while ago.
But yeah I can appreciate how the SRS thing works.

I'll probably shoot for 7-day review crams. More than that would probably take too long to get through on a daily basis; I only have about 2 hours to study each weeknight, and I don't want anki cannabalising reading time once I'm at that point.
>>
>>69016121
I also wrapped it up in around 2 months. I'm down to about 25 a day a year later. I constantly add new ones though.

I took some weekends off though just to keep my daily reviews floating around 200 for the deck.

Having a good story, closing your eyes, breathing, and really envisioning will save your ass in the long run. It seems stupid but that's what it all hinges on.
>>
+ I'm assuming you know Kanji Koohii, yeah? The stories there are so stupid but memorable. My deck actually included the top 2 upvoted stories for each character, which almost always sufficed when I couldn't think of something.
