Gumbo is a French and French-Canadian (cajun) stew. It is still common in Acadian Canada. Once the cajuns got to Louisiana they just replaced the original local foods like turnip and lobster with new local foods like shrimp and okra.

I've heard there is a creole gumbo that is probably from Huguenots and slaves, but Cajun gumbo is just a new spin on a common French and Acadien stew.
Basically just a French style base with local shit thrown in.
Up here it is game sausage, turnip, cabbage, lobster, fiddleheads, cod, etc. Down there it became pork sausage, shrimp, okra, etc.
The spices are a bit hotter down there too which was a nice addition.

>>

Haven't heard of any of those except for the clam chowder and the whisky.
I think clam chowder is American.
As for whisky, anything that isn't single malt Scotch (or made in the same fashion, like Amrut, Yamazaki, Hellyers, etc.) is utter rubbish. I don't mean to insult, though.
>>
>>68943410
damn i always confuse there three things, poutine, putain and putin. how do you pronounce russia's president name in french? basically poutine?
>>
>>68943372
An animal's brisket is just the strap in front of the chest between the forelegs

So, everything that isn't that is left

Brisket is generally considered a shit cut. What old worlders don't know is that places like America, where for a long time waste was unacceptable and starvation a real fear, have found ways to make rubbish cuts tasty. Barbecue brisket and yankee pot roast are great examples of shit meat cuts made excellent by New World ingenuity.
>>
>>68943372
There's nothing of it left. We just cut entire chunks off of the cow and waste it.

>>68943300
In fact, we've been breeding a special cow for the past few years that doesn't even develop certain cuts of meat, like brisket.

Saves us the effort of just throwing it away.
>>
>>68943522

Poutine = shit dish from Québec
Putain = whore
Poutine = Putin (we have to write it that way or it would be pronounced the same as putain)
>>
>>68943551
>What old worlders don't know is that places like America, where for a long time waste was unacceptable and starvation a real fear, have found ways to make rubbish cuts tasty

It was exactly the same in Europe, you know.
To this day, we still eat a lot of bad cuts and organs that are not consumed in Americas.
>>
>>68943492
Clam chowder was brought to New England from the French in Nova Scotia.
You have also heard of peanutbutter.
Single malts are good (especially islays) but so are lots of Scotch blends, American bourbon (though a bit sweet), Canadian rye whisky, etc.

If the only thing you drink is single malt Scotch you are doing yourself a disservice.

Good taste. To be fair I do like the Big Peat blend.

I would argue that he who drinks much of any whisky that isn't good Scotch is doing himself (and whisky) a disservice.

As people say here, "the fruit never falls too far from the tree".

Worth mentioning the only decent American cuisines are heavily French and Spanish-influenced.
>>
>>68943934
To be fair, whisky and the North American whiskeys both have different purposes and are entirely different in their ingredients and flavour.

I'd never make, say, an Old Fashioned with a malt whisky, for example.

It isn't Turkish döner, it's Canadian donair.

A greek family brought döner kebab to the Maritimes years ago but it didn't sell well in their restaurant so they changed it to suit a westernised palate. Using mature beef instead of lamb and a sauce made from ingredients found in every Canadian's pantry, vinegar, sugar, and canned milk, then put on white cheese (usually mozzarella).

It's a uniquely Canadian dish based on Turkish döner kebab.

I unironically love American style big fat pizza

Italy can fuck off with their 1mm gay shit

Some American "food" is questionable though like any country.

Amerindians had a peanut paste, but peanutbutter as we know it was first patented by a French Canadian.

But gin is the worst spirit.

>>68944107
That doesn't count. Almost every country adapts an introduced cuisine in some way.
I wouldn't call the Western-friendly Chinese food a British/American or whatever invention. When really it's still Chinese food modified so we'd like it better.

Pizza is still Italian, despite there being many American variations on it.

Whisky>Whiskey>Rum>Vodka>Gin

Going by the more mainstream ones to drink anyway, excluding stuff like grappa, akvavit, raki etc. Even then I'd rather any of those to gin.
>>
>>68944070

Tongue, liver, kidneys (my favourite) lungs, bowels, heart, blood, etc.

Whisky is the best spirit.
Gin is the best clear spirit.

For me Gin usually has too much of a perfume taste. What I've ranked them on is when drinking straight. The best gin ever had was some Dutch stuff. The only reason it was so nice was it tasted less of Gin and more of Vodka.

I actually totally agree and never put in the gomme syrup (sugar) when I mix one for myself.

It's basically just a G&T with a splash of fresh lemon juice instead of a lime garnish.

Jenever is the Dutch gin.
That perfume flavour is probably juniper. Try something like Hendricks, it's more of a light botanical gin and less juniper. Considered a good gateway gin for people who are used to vodka cocktails.
>>
>>68944873
Jenever is the dutch word for gin mate, the same drink
>>
>>68944711
I also like apple crumble and bacon wrapped scallops fron the Netherlands.
I sailed on schooners too for years which is a Dutch rig.

>green pea soup
>soup before pie
Absolutely the wrong way to do it.
Anyway you should try it before passing judgement. Get a meat pie, tomato sauce on top, pour on the split-pea and ham soup, and add a bit of cider vinegar or pepper. It's surprisingly good.

>>68944707
Vodka literally tastes of nothing and is only good for home-made liqueur.

Gin is just about the only clear spirit I would drink straight (perhaps at all).

>>68944749
Soda vs. tonic changes the flavour a fair bit.
I usually put lemon in my G&T anyway (a slice, not juice).

No
Jenever is made from malt wine with juniper and other botanicals
Gin, based on jenever, is made from a neutral spirit, with juniper and botanicals added for flavour.
Similar, but not the same thing.
>>
>>68945021
Tonic has quinine, which is bitter, but I use tonic and soda interchangeably in most drinks. I prefer tonic in summer and spring because of its antimalarial properties.
>>
>>68945162
Just a different type like red and white wine, in the Netherlands it's considered the same drink.
>>
>people unironically enjoy gin

how
shit like fucking after-shave
>>
>>68945365
It's not really considered the same since it's illegal to label gin as jenever according to EU regulations (to be labeled jenever it has to come from Netherlands, Belgium, or parts of German speaking Europe)
Jenever is malt wine flavoured with juniper to mask the nasty taste, gin is a neutral (basically vodka) flavoured with juniper to give it taste.
>>
>>68945481
When I turned 18 and was able to drink in pubs legally for the first time I decided to try all the shit I'd never been able to try before. So I ordered a Gin and Tonic.

Never had any of it before so I tried the Gin first
It was awful
Then tried the tonic
It was also awful
After mixing them together I realised it was still awful.
>>
>>68945544
No, only Old and Young jenever have to come from those parts. I've seen English Jenever in the store regularly
