It took me about 5 months of 30 minutes a day or so on the Spanish one to complete that tree. Might have been slightly quicker for me though since I already know a fair bit of Portuguese.

This sounds incredibly shitty. You should be just reading the text, looking up any words or phrases you don't know, and figuring it out from there if you can. At the most, you can use a parallel text of English on one side and German on the other, but you absolutely shouldn't be writing out English sentences to help you comprehend German sentences.

You can try, not only with Duolingo of course. The learning community for Russian is not exactly "welcoming". They're a lot more impatient and assertive, insisting on the rigidity of their personal pronunciations. It's because Communism and poor Czarist education system disallowed natural changes in Russian, so there is very little leeway in speech. Everyone copies Moscow so any slight deviation in that pronunciation is viewed as vatnik tier crime. I don't know how else to describe it.

View it like this, if you're up to date with stereotypes. A Russian trying to teach you Russian is as patient and thoughtful as a Frenchman trying to speak English

Finally, you need to "ease" yourself into more complicated IE languages, since with Slavic ones, you will be barraged with rules, especially regarding irregularities in conjugations and insistence on gender

A dry book on comparative grammar. Good to teach yourself French using your knowledge of Spanish (keeping your Spanish polished as well).
