Do you honestly think boyaryshnik is a real bath lotion? It's an alcohol surrogate, they even sell it 24/7 with vending machines on street. Dirt cheap, but since it's not a real alcohol it's not a target of excises, so it's extremely cheap to make and thus really profitable.

Vodka (the cheapest "serious" alcoholic beverage) is pretty expensive for those people so they resort to surrogates.

Not here, they do sell ethyl alcohol in drug stores but that's actually more expensive than stuff like pictured which you could actually get for something like 25 American cents, I mean that's enough for any one alcoholic to get fucked up, we are talking a fucking quarter, I had a friend gift me a couple of cases of something similar to have as emergency booze, like the stuff we'd drink when there wasn't anything else, they lasted fucking years and I didn't finish the second box before I gre tired of the stuff and actually gave it away (the cheapest booze you can buy in Mexico is certainlñy guaranteed to give you killer hangovers) if you've got literal millions using surrogates >>68931543 you'd think the authorities themselves would encourage something like this.

The reason aguardiente is the cheapest booze you can get here is we've got more sugar cane than we know what to do with but we can only export a relatively small amount of sugar to the US because there's quotas to protect your corn farmers, meaning sugar is so expensive for you that even soft drinks like Coca-Cola use the artificially cheaper corn syrup, which is subsidized by your taxpayers.

Can't say much more about Russia alcoholism than what's already in the thread, but here, we do have plenty options for cheap ass alcoholics to get cheap ass alcohol.
The thing with consuming industrial alcohol is the price-to-power ratio. Getting pic related gives you 80-90vol bottle that is, roughly, ten times cheaper than a 40vol vodka bottle (so with the power ratio it's about twenty times more cost effective). You could get a "cheap wine" drink for about the same price, but it only has, like, 20vol power.
It's not all about the price tag.

I don't know, that seems like homeless type of logic to me, you can literally get 5 pesos for a bottle of booze like I posted here in 20 minutes standing on a street corner begging let's say each person gave you 1-2 pesos (that's 5.10 American cents) you's only need to deal with 3-5 people literally giving you junk change. Alternatively you could pick aluminum cans from trash bins, let's say you actually have the dignity to do demeaning work, and get that in say something like an hour. That's 20 minutes to an hour of your time to make enough to buy the one bottle of booze which will not so severely fuck up your health and diminish your lifespan. If you're that bad of an alcoholic you're drinking your own puke it does sound like the better choice.

Maybe it's a thiong with freezing temperature countries, I remember reading something about how the reason Scandinavian countries turned booze into a state enterprise is alcoholism used to be so rampant out of control there they saw state monoply as their way out. That may not work in Russia because of black markets tho.
>>
>>68932223
meh, we've got the climate for it so I wouldn't say it's artificially cheap, there's no government subsidies.

Gorbachev's anti-alcohol campaign

During 1985–87, Mikhail Gorbachev carried out an anti-alcohol campaign with partial prohibition,[7] colloquially known as the "dry law". Prices of vodka, wine and beer were raised, and their sales were restricted in amount and time of day. People who were caught drunk at work or in public were prosecuted.

The reform had an effect on alcoholism in the country, as evident from statistics showing some fall in criminality and rise in life expectancy, but economically it was a serious blow to the state budget (a loss of approximately 100 billion rubles to the exchequer according to Alexander Yakovlev) after alcohol production migrated to the black market economy.

It's a "bathing oil drinking bydlo" logic. Just like this thread's topic.
Thing is, Russia and Poland alike, don't have the 1 peso sugar cane alcohol. So you either end up saving up 140 rus for a proper cheap vodka or get toxic bathing oil/industrial alcohol for tenth of that.

I wonder what would happen if Russians started drinking Rakija.
Vodka is a girls drink, i mean one can drink a bottle of it.
But when 4 people drink a 1.5 l bottle of rakia, shit is bound to happen.
They will go somewhere, not falling around, not tripping over things, just go as rabid dogs into the night do either wreck shit, attack someone for cigarettes, take shit that doesnt belong to them and start random fights, or just go drink some more.
>>
>>68936309

>>
>>68933030

>>
>>68936386
Its for everyone really. Its traditional, even our entity present brews his own and he is a millionaire.
Although, rakija differs based on how you brew it. Poor people tend to make it as stronger as possible and in large quantities, which results in basically wretched shit that nobody likes.
People that want to make good rakija, they know a lot about chemistry, they follow how sweet the fruit goo is and how much sugar it needs added, more sugar means more alcohol, but also more of the acid after the alcohol has stopped coming out.
Every sane person person has the measure glass thing that reads percentages and grades, and if it is too high, it gets 'softened' by distilled water.
Sometimes one has to reboil the rakia, this know the 2l bottle trick to collect all the chemicals that smell like instant glue into the bottle but let rakia go on top and spill over into the collector.
Its basically an art. And the distillers are expensive as fuck, especially the hand made. The best ones go up to 2500E, so the poor mostly rent them.
Villages use one or two, they pass them around and the owner gets either money or doesnt have to make his own rakia.
>>
>>68933160
It's the same everywhere. No one (especially liberals) wants to get their hands dirty with real problems.
>>
>>68932577
The 80s anti-alcohol campaign was totally bungled because all that happened is that they closed down 150 year old vineyards started by the tsars while completely ignoring the low cost homemade alcohol that bydlos were drinking.
>>
>>68933718
I don't think so, here you can but pure methanol off the shelves. It takes about 100ml to kill a man, but drinking 10ml is enough to permanently blind you. Of course, no-one here ever does (knock on wood).

Anyway, methanol fumes from an unheated bottle will not poison you.

t. organic chemist
>>
>>68937418
Also;,I want to add that the ONLY antidote for methanol poisoning is ethanol. What they do in the hospital is they keep you shitface drunk for 4 days by blood infusions.

That is because the set of enzyms that metabolise ethanol also metabolise methanol, but they prefer ethanol. Problem is, methanol stays much longer in the body, hence the 4 days infusion with ethanol.

It is not methanol itself that is toxic, but its metabolism products formaldehyde and formic acid (which first attacks the human retina, your eyesight).

So small amounts of methanol present in vodka, whiskey etc... are usually not a problem because an excess is always present. This may have been the logic of the illegal manufacturer, but he added too much.

On the other hand, the guy who just drank a sip and was blinded, that sounds like no ethanol at all was present and it was pure methanol.

The alcohols smell markedly different, I can easily recognize the pure methanol from pure ethanol or isopropanol. Yet I guess they added aromas to mask the smell and taste.
