In case it helps anyone, I made a shitty python script for rote learning words. It works similar to those kana rote mashing tools. Using python2 it'll work fine on linux, but I've not tested with windows. (There's an OS specific function but I added a check for windows, in theory it should work.)

I included some files for the usual culprits, days of the week, numbers, "numbers of things". Making your own word lists for those bullshit similar/contradicting words is simple enough though.

I'm having trouble relearning cards. If I get a review wrong it will then come back but only require me to get the answer correct once before it gets pushed off until tomorrow. How do I make it so I have to review a few times before putting it off for the next day? I don't see interval settings for old cards like the new cards have.

/int/ I have a problem

I recently got a new computer and used AnkiWeb to move my deck to a different computer

This of course was the 2K/6K Core vocab deck listed in the OP

-but-

Something went wrong. In the decks now, it only lists 1 version of a card instead of all possible versions

As you see, Yen does NOT list Circle. It only shows money and doesn't show the "Circle" part like it did before I moved computers

So I might have to re-download the deck, EXCEPT, I don't want to lose all my progress in this deck. What do I fucking do?
>>
>>68898964
Are they meant to be shown on the same card? From the beginning, yen and circle have been two separate cards for me.
>>
>>68899263
they were on the same card for me
>>
>>68898964
They're two separate cards in the Core6000 deck.

Yen and Circle are big enough differences to get their own cards. Similar to 起きる. Chances are you're confusing yourself.
>>
What do I do when a card gets suspended? Put those in their own deck?
>>
>>68900769
Up to you, you can leave them for a while then unsuspend them to bring them back in. Maybe do some rote learning with that card to help it stick. You could even turn off suspension and just keep at it until you get it.

don't skip the (optional step for images) part this time

as for stroke orders

https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1964372878

download and install that, then edit it's sourcecode (Addons>Kanji Color-rizer>Edit)

change srcField="Kanji" to srcField="Vocabulary-Kanji" or whatever the field for the Kanji character is in your deck. For the core 6k we're using its "Vocabulary-Kanji"

then Tools-->Kanji Colorizer--->Regenerate all

you're done and enjoy your new deck.

One is about ten times more common than the other, and since the meanings are basically opposite it should be obvious from context when they mean まじなう
>>
I changed my Anki settings and it stops with 10 cards on learning saying no cards due yet. What did I mess up?
>>
>>68910770
Put them back to default. I can't tell what you "messed up" if I don't know what settings you changed.
>>
>>68910770
Your learning step (1 10 20 30) is longer than your learn ahead limit. You have to wait until enough time passes for the learning step delay to go below your learn ahead limit to see the card. You can change the learn ahead limit in tools>preferences

Should I up my new cards from 20 to 30?

or would that make retention worse?

Up to you. However you want it to work.

>>68911100
You can try increasing it.
I was scared that it would hurt retention, but no, I'm doing 100 cards per day on average and have like 95% retention rate. The number of cards will probably go down as I get to more obscure vocab that I haven't heard before, but I don't set an arbitrary limit if I can keep going.

I have shit retention. When you remember new words, do you remember the kana writing, or do you remember the pronunciation? I usually remember the pronunciation rather than the writing, which is why I think I have such poor retention. It's easy to get the order of syllables mixed up, or confuse a similar sound in your head. However, whenever I try tor recall the kana writing for a word on a card, I can't help but remember the pronunciation first, and then come up with the writing from that, rather than remembering the writing. Is there a way I can break this bad habit, or is this just normal and fine, and by poor retention is probably due to something else?

While I study everything in Japanese, I find it easier to remember readings in romaji. So I pay attention to the pronunciation, check the hiragana reading for duplicate/long vowels and then memorize it mentally converted into romaji.
Does anybody else do this?

This

It's honestly great if you want to learn how to speak, but for reading it only serves as a crutch. You're gonna end up remembering the furi' and not the kanji.

That's why I had to turn off my furigana setting on Kotoba. It was making things 2easy4speaking and 2nothing4reading.
>>
Noob here, How do I use Anki effectively? For example what should I do if I see a word that's new? Should I just write it out 20 times? What about a word I've seen before but can't for the life of me remember the definition?
>>
>>68933462
The word is second nature > Easy
Remember immediately > Good
Remember after a short or long pause > Hard
Don't remember or fuck it up > Again

Doesn't matter how old it is, if you don't remember the reading or definition then click again. For new words I think it's good to have them at the start of the review so that you can get multiple exposures as you do your revision. I just mash again until I remember them. If it's really fucking me over then I might write it down or do some other kind of rote learning.

I also recommend doing Custom Study > Review Forgotten Cards > 1 or 2 days, so that you get even more exposure to those new words and words you forgot.
>>
>>68929882
That number is your total kanji in the deck. Unless you expect me to manually count all those rows and check if there are more than 1800 kanji there. In this case, you are out of luck.

>Review Forgotten Cards > 1 or 2 days
What does this do? Isn't flunking a card naturally going to put it to be reviewed in 1 or 2 days?
>>
>>68934047
It's just extra revision to help short term memory of new and forgotten cards. If you do anki in the morning and want to do revision of those cards same day in the afternoon or night, set it to 1 day. If you do anki late at night and want to revise the new and forgotten from yesterday in the morning, set it to 2 days.

Once you're done the cards go back into their main deck. Or, if you just partially do it, deleting the Custom Study Session deck will return them to their own deck.
>>
>>68933592
I always do review forgotten cards -> 14 days after I finish my normal reps.

It seems like overkill but it actually saves time in the long run because it really irons out those sneaky bastards you read wrong every time for whatever reason. I realize that redundant brute force study is what SRS seeks to avoid, but there are special cases that call for it.
>>
>>68929285
I just read whatever I want to read.
Whether or not it has furigana doesn't really matter to me.
>>
>>68929285
I agree.

There's so much shit out there that I would have no problem reading if there weren't furigana, but I avoid it because the eyes are always distracted by it, and you wind up reading so much slower
>>
>>68936000
14 days? How many new cards do you do each day, and how many cards are added in the 14 day custom study deck?
>>
>>68936925
At this point it's usually 60 cards a day

and the accumulation of the mistakes in the past two weeks is another 60 cards

I know I'm doing well when that second number shrinks. Also really incentivizes me not to make lazy mistakes, or else I'll be seeing that card again every day for the next two weeks

So, /djt/, a question for you about speaking practice.

I've lived in JP as a graduate student for half a year, came here N3+, now close to N2 (took it this session, not sure if I passed, but wasn't outright failing either). But that's understanding-wise, I still can't really speak or write without making a dozen grammatical mistakes in a simple frase.
So, anyway, a Jap girl from the university invited me out a few weeks ago, and we chatted at a cafe for a few hours. Fast-forward next week, same thing. Still interested in me, that's surprising. I'm your average socially awkward /a/utist, and not really interested in anything to do with 3DPD (besides, she is 6/10, and that's being pretty generous), so I consider these meetings pure language practice.

Is it worth continuing, or is oral practice a meme unless you are at a really high level, where you just need to hone your ability to express yourself the way natives do? 'Cuz my greedy little kokoro breaks everytime I shell out those several thousand yen for the both of us, and besides these events scare me shitless.

>>68942184
Well, even a monkey can learn Japanese, eventually.
What I'm saying is you're mocking a method that works, even if it's not optimal to you.

I learned English through English media and Wiktionary still saves my ass sometimes. I don't see why doing the same in Japanese would be a bad idea (although that's personally not how I approach my Japanese studies).

>I don't see why doing the same in Japanese would be a bad idea
There may or may not be far more English media out there than Japanese and the quality may or may not be far superior.
>>
>>68942457
The method in question leaves the learner completely unable to speak or write, and doesn't do much for their listening either. All they can do is have kind of an idea of what's going on in erotic story games. Which is why I was asking if the method updated.

>>68942626

>There may or may not be far more English media out there than Japanese

>There may or may not be far more English media out there than Japanese and
That's subjective though
>>
>>68942765
>English people don't speak at a million miles an hour in blurs of syllables indiscriminate of when one word ends and the other begins.
Well, they do. In fact you may find yourself hard-pressed to find words that extend past two pronounced syllables in English in daily conversation.

For instance, the words I've used: instance, hard-pressed, pronounced, conversation.

All of it is compressed in two clusters of consonants with some vowel cues.
[ins - tans] [hard - prest] [pro - nounst] [conv - sayshn]
Arguably I might be going a bit too far with the "conversation" compression, but you get the gist, it's not like nips don't have tri/polysyllable words themselves.

I got myself thinking about this recently, and I even did some tests in Portuguese. In our case, trisyllable words are pretty common if you only count up to the stressed syllable, but that already shows a bit more of structured grammar dependency than, say, English, where word order cuts a lot of corners in a way not possible in Portuguese.

But if you take in account dialects, there are some around here that really manage to compress the language past even native comprehension, like PT-PT, Minas Gerais and Northeastern accents.

cont.
>>
>>68942626
If the volume and quality of Japanese media isn't to your liking, that's too bad. In that case your journey will be much harder, both practically and in terms of motivation. When this thread was in /a/, it could be assumed that everyone was capable of finding raw Japanese content that they enjoy, but perhaps /int/ isn't quite so capable...
>>
>>68942765
On the method discussion, I agree a crutch is not the best approach, but it is the easiest approach to get things done. Many wouldn't have the motivation to learn it in an "ideal" way. Me included, as I bruteforce vocabulary via Anki.

But as long as you keep a conscious mind about your studying and try to apply what you learn (discussion forums, watching Japanese media [which I think 99% here do anyway], studying production in parallel), all the previously mentioned crutches will become useful.

Words often won't come out of the tip of my tongue, but after looking up at Jisho and actually using it, somehow it becomes a stronger method of reviewing than Anki for that particular word. Building memories play a great part in this.

>>68942626
I for one consume English and Japanese media in a similar proportion, and there's a virtually infinite source for more. Not sure what you mean here.
>>
>>68942765
Speaking and writing can be added to "the method" with a microscopic effort, and there's nothing to prevent you learning those things later even if you completely ignore them.

>All they can do is have kind of an idea of what's going

So you are actually saying NOT to watch TV, right?

I will never understand the "anime is not Japanese" meme. You have to be really retarded to think any televised media anywhere depicts actual common speech.

And you have to be doubly retarded to think learning more stiff/artificial language used in these pieces of fiction add no actual knowledge to your repertoire.

Nobody's going to go out there and speak like Kokoro-nyan, even anime shows there are more slurred and formal ways of speaking. Unless you consume SoL 24/7, you can be in contact with several speaking styles and get a feel for the social context in which each one is used.
>>

>I will never understand the "anime is not Japanese" meme. You have to be really retarded to think any televised media anywhere depicts actual common speech.
there really is a big difference between dubbed stuff and actual speech though

No, I'm saying there's a big difference between English media and Japanese in terms of quality and availability. If you don't like variety shows, the news, soap operas, or anime, you're pretty much stuck. Whereas in America there's so much content you can satisfy pretty much any niche genre you want to watch at the moment.

And therein lies the difference between learning something like English which a lot of people do through media, and learning something like Japanese which a lot of people struggle with: compelling content.

I just want to sing along to J-pop and read VNs... Is that a weird reason to learn this language?
>>

>>
>>68948624
same here, sort of... I have no interest in VNs, they seem to be concentrated autism
>>
>>68947723
Did you stop reading there?

>>68948345
Ah, I see. Personally I haven't learned enough Japanese to go after more niche stuff, but can you name a few types of content formats that wouldn't be available in Japanese?

I have watched a few documentaries, interviews, vlogging, instructional videos and drawing tutorials in Japanese and they seemed pretty watchable.

Of course there will be less content as Japanese is not a lingua franca, but eh, Japan is still relatively big when it comes to audiovisual media.

Anything that motivates is fine. On another note, Japanese doesn't seem to be a very practical language in such a context.

They've been hard at work since the 60s to erase Canada's real history and replace it with a foundation of multiculturalism (the first country in the world to declare such ridiculousness)
>>
>>68949034
i bet you believe that jews are controlling america
just admit that you are a pussy
>>
>>68948280
Fixed.
>>
>>68949170
Well it is a project stemming from marxist theories, and Marx was jewish, so in that sense yes. However the globalists attempting to erase borders and centralize their global hegemonic power structure are far from being only jews.

As for Canada, Pierre Trudeau (father of our current president) was best friends with Castro, and he labeled Canada as being first and foremost for migrants and multiculturalism. It's not tin foil shit, but I wouldn't expect a brown mutt like you to understand the importance of ethnic and cultural heritage.
>>
>>68949406
where does japan fit in this
also where are all your immigrants, apparently canada is supposed to be "multiculturalist" but i only see leafs there

Are you me? I tried to explain to people that imagining images is hard for me when I hear conversation. Easy for ideas from books, but when learning words, I just see the words

I was replying to your ignorant comment implying that jews don't have disproportionate influence in America. Where the fuck was Japan in your comment you stupid sub-human.
>>

you still haven't explained how japan has anything to do with your tin foil fantasy and you probably don't know how

Canada is sort of multicultural, Acceptance and stuff is preached in school but if you go to any major University, you will see allot of racism. Brown people hating white people . White people hating brown people . Chinese people hating white people ect...

This country is still a very nice place to live in my opinion.

>>

Yup. Go make a thread, we'll be right there.

Japanese may be xenophobic or not, I don't know, but they are certainly civilised. So long as you show respect and support yourself properly what's the worst that can happen?

Yep, we /int/ now. Also, all of those conspiracy theories are laughably ridiculous. Conspiracies of that size would be sniffed out very quickly, especially with all the tinfoil nutjobs whining about it all the time.

>>68948855
>Of course there will be less content as Japanese is not a lingua franca
It's not about Japanese being a lingua franca. It's about economy. Think about the amount of Canadian, British, and Australian shows that get made every year and how many are watched around the world. They just can't keep up in quality because their home markets don't have the advertising support. American TV shows are made for ads, not DVD sales (which are paltry in comparison).

I mean, look at what America did for The Office. The British version was done in 2 seasons, the American version had 11 and was watched worldwide. The American version was just better entertainment.
>>
Why the fuck did you people move this thread off /a/? Everything is so fucking confusing now because there is one thread on /JP/ one on /int/ and a shit ton of people who have no idea what happened to the djt

Anyway

>駅のホームで待っていたら行きたい駅のホームはここでいいのか聞かれて...
伝わったかもしれないけどうまく言えなかった自分が情けないなって思って...

What the fuck does this mean? Context was a girl said that she didn't know how to communicate her feelings in English, and said something about the word 'cowardly'. I responded by asking her what she was trying to say and she responded with that.
>>
Is the v2k anki deck any good? It says the one I use teaches you newspaper shit, and this v2k deck is from japanese media. Here's a leddit link
https://www.reddit.com/r/LearnJapanese/comments/4o4exw/kickstart_learning_japanese_with_visual_novels/
>>
>>68952137
Are you the same guy who always asks questions while giving only his own possibly flawed English interpretation of the context instead of the context itself and then gets called out by me and others for being an idiot?

Because you really need to start posting the Japanese context with your retard questions if you want good answers.
>>
>>68952137
Long story short, mod went on rampage over generals, DJT was the only one kicked off the board (to /int/). Some anons didn't want to stay on /int/ and found that /jp/ didn't delete the threads.
So now we have two. This one is superior though.
>駅のホームで待っていたら行きたい駅のホームはここでいいのか聞かれて...
>伝わったかもしれないけどうまく言えなかった自分が情けないなって思って...
Someone or some people were waiting at a train platform and asked her "Is this the right platform to get to (the train platform they want to go)?" and she fumbled her English and felt ashamed.
>>
>>68952137
>駅のホームで待っていたら行きたい駅のホームはここでいいのか聞かれて...
after waiting at the station platform, being asked if this is the station platform where I wanted to go

I don't quite get the ここでいいのか here though

>伝わったかもしれないけどうまく言えなかった自分が情けないなって思って...
maybe it came through but I couldn't quite express it, thinking aren't I pathetic
>>
>>68947723
>in anime they always speak very clearly, almost never mumble, slur or other shit

In anime they often yell though, which is just as hard to understand. Go watch the "high school girls" sections of nichibros and tell me they are easy to understand.

Drama will be more helpful in terms of understanding actual people though. There's no reason not to watch a variety of stuff.
>>
>>68952738
But yelling just makes the speech clearer. Especially when it's scripted.
>>
>>68951708

Why would you do that, they're the worst shitposter on the entire board

I didn't ask the question, but the 行きたい駅のホームは part confuses me.

Is it "station's platform that I want to go to" or "platform to get to the station I want to go to"?
I don't understand why they'd ask how to get to a specific platform in a certain station, as though the train may go to the right station but not the right platform or something.
>>
It's hilarious how the DJT on /jp/ gets hate everytime they remake the thread which puts it back on page 1. They are so delusional about the "cultures" being so similar between DJT and /int/, yet half their thread ends up being meta-posting telling them to fuck off even after 3 weeks of trying.

The /int/ version gets a lot less hate and stabilized a lot quicker, which shows it has more of a place here than on /jp/.
>>
>>68953612
>station's platform that I want to go to
That one. And ここでいいのか is basically saying "is this the right place" or "is this the right way".
Perhaps they are trying to get to a transfer point or something.

On reflection, it also sounds like "Is this the place I wanted to go to?" which sounds better.
>>
>>68953664
posters on /jp/ don't like people that actually have a genuine interest in japan and they don't like being reminded that there are people with actual ambitions
anything outside their comfort zone gets attacked, they are very hateful and sad people
>>
>>68953802
Sorry red southern cross, I remember you being the only poster with that flag since the move, and I remember you being one of the autists who shit on here and moved to the /jp/ DJT. Now I see where all the falseflagging accusations over there comes from. You're the ones falseflagging this thread to encourage more traffic on /jp/. Now it's clear why you shitters hate flags, it's because now you can't self-reply and falseflag as easily on here as opposed to /a/ and /jp/.
>>
>>68952854

Some old men were looking down on me like I was a piece of shit, saying something about gaijins but I couldn't understand them cause they were whispering.

I once went to a restaurant where they didn't speak English and they literally told me to fuck off cause "there is no English menu available" even though I said it's fine in fucking Japanese.

Another guy called me a shitty foreigner cause I took to long to buy a ticket for the subway.

People were rude in other situations as well but I can't tell if this was due to racism or not.
I mean most people were friendly as fuck but I also met some rude people in my 3 week trip, kinda makes me wonder how it feels like having to deal with that everyday.

What's your learning steps settings? 1 10 is not enough. You should have something like 1 10 20 at the very least. I have 1 5 15 25.

Other than that, try to spend a little more time on cards that you think will be harder to remember. Look up the kanji in jisho using the #kanji tag. Write it on paper. For stroke order I use http://kanji.sljfaq.org/kanjivg.html because it's better than jisho's stroke order pictures.

So it's (行きたい)駅のホーム rather than (行きたい駅)のホーム.
That makes sense. The only places on Google I could find the same construction being used were
http://detail.chiebukuro.yahoo.co.jp/qa/question_detail/q1442698589
which appears to be written by a non-Japanese and
http://www.tour.ne.jp/blog/ohshu/58115/
which strikes me as ambiguous.

>行きたい駅のホームを事前に確認することができます
1. checking the station platform you want to go to ahead of time is possible
2. checking which platform is for the station you want to go to ahead of time is possible
In this case, 2 strikes me as closer in meaning to the Japanese.
