That it's inefficient plus a bit of banter.

To give an example "k" in Swedish can be pronounced as a hard k, producing the regular k sound. But it can also be pronounced as a "soft k", which sounds roughly like "s(c)h" or ɕ. So for instance "kina" (china) is pronounced like "china". Same word but one letter less than English and German.
