There is a lot of Irish Heritage from that area; Italian too. Irish and Italian accents both influenced New England accents, especially those in NY, MA, CT, and RI. I'm not informed as to how much it influenced the culture of that area, though.

Americans are really weird when it comes to race. When I was there, I met a friend of a friend, and we were all talking and he said his family came from Mexico. I commented that he didn't look like a typical Mexican, because he really was very pale, and he answered, get this: "only my parents are Mexican, I was born in American, so I'm white."

In another conversation with an American, unrelated to this group, I mentioned that I'm very mixed, and that my father's black. This guy asked, "oh, where's he from?" And I answered " . . . Brazil, I'm Brazilian, rememeber?" And he said "oh well then he's not black, he's Brazilian."
