I live in the Midwest. There's absolutely nothing to do here in mid-Michigan. If I want to go enjoy an expanse of uninterrupted wilderness, I have to drive at least three hours north. If I want to go to the city, I'll need to drive either two hours to Detroit or four hours to Chicago. The entirety of where I live is, for all purposes, a big suburb. Everything closes early, nobody knows their neighbors, and winter is cold enough that going outside is pointless.

Where I live, it's rare to see anybody outside on the sidewalks, even in the summer. There's just nowhere to go, even if you want to walk. Parking lots are the size of inland lakes. People isolate themselves in their cars and rarely interact with strangers outside of them. Compared to much of the world - especially Latin America and South Asia - we're very adamant about not talking to people we don't know outside of polite chats with cashiers or elevator-mates.
