Why are Brits so proud about an event where Hitler let their soldiers tuck tail and run, leaving tons of vital munitions, vehicles and equipment while French troops provided cover for their escape?
Treating it like a goddamn victory instead of the utter embarrassment it really was.

They don't really have anything to be proud of during the war.

They've won the war eventually, so they can paint their defeats as victories because in the end it all worked out.
I think if they didn't escape then that was it.
That loss of manpower would be too much maybe.

It isn't treated like a victory, it's treated as something that would've knocked us out of the war if it had failed; and the image of regular civilian ships and sailors joining navy ships and heading over to France is pretty romanticised.
You can call it an embarrassment, but leaving hundreds of thousands of infantry in a very clearly defeated France to either be slaughtered or taken prisoner would've been fucking stupid.

Not getting 30 million of our people killed was pretty nice.
Dunkirk was down to French incompetence.
