Now they need to secure the city for the rest of the war, which is not trivial. The army has been winning battles thanks to Russian firepower and Iranian intelligence, but securing the gains on the ground are a different story.

In addition there are many other fronts to focus on now. Deir ez-Zor has been besieged by Daesh for five years and is about to fall, Palmyra has been lost again and Idlib is firmly controlled by the jihadfags.

Alleppo was held by a ragtag bunch of rebels, kurds who decided to ally with assad (yellow), legit scary islamists who chopped heads and shit and also some democratic rebels I think.
As Assad asked continously to surrender and they didnt want to, all of them got regarded as an enemy, got bomb'd and the islamists came out as the uniting and strongest force.
These got their shit kicked in now and the victors filter all civillians left for being eventual enemys and troublemakers along the fighters for execution as it happens in most wars where you can get away for it.
Some civs are said to have been held there on gunpoint as human shields tho, dont know how they will treat these.
The West is very angry about this as it is gritty, not pretty and also means that Assad wont be removed now as he has the major population centers under his control now and at least will get away with ruling a part of syria with the only opposition left being of questionable alliance (so pro sharia most often.)

EU offers a lot of money if Assad will grant his opposition much more control in the provinces, so the syrian government can now accpet or denie various barters to see how they can come out on top.
Also, the fighting will still continue in the countryside, also a lot of terrorattacks for the next decades like in afghanistan.
