Brazil uses wheeled APCs which weight around a third that of a modern MBT. Their logistic requirements in far flung areas are much lower, and they are much more strategically mobile (better for road travel, can be flown by transport aircraft). While providing enough protection against the small arms they are most likely to encounter.

It is modern. Probably has better aerodynamic properties and stuff. That being said, I liked the blocky look as well. It kind of had similar aesthetics going for it as the Tiger tanks.
