Medical personnel works for pennies, GPs work for pennies.

The average age of a Polish nurse is 40+ and now you can't even become a nurse without university degree (there used to be med schools), so obviously noone wants to work and we have to import nurses from Ukraine.

Hospitals are heavily underfunded.
ERs are so underfunded they end up swallowing over half of the budget of every major hospital.

I only was in hospital once, but I had a room including bathroom for myself, they asked me what I want for food (4 menus to choose from) then ran their tests and stuff on me. All very modern and nice.

It's all about being a big fish in a small pond. My dad found a medium sized town in the Great Lakes region where there were only 3 OB/GYNs. In his career he delivered over 6000 babies, a record for the state. He was a big shot in the small town and made really good money.

The downside was when he wanted to retire he had a hell of a time recruiting a doctor to come to the town and take over his practice. Everyone wanted to live in the sunbelt, or the big cities. He showed them the numbers and how they could make a killing, but it took him 2 years to find someone willing to take over his practice in a town of 52K people.

Today's med school students were raised watching Hollywood versions of medicine, where all the doctors drove Porsches, had vacation homes, and fucked mistresses while vacationing in the caribbean. Reality is it's a 50-60 hour / week slog, being on call weekends and evenings, and likely having to just take a salary from a national hospital chain to have admitting privileges. Americans won't do it, so a ton of our new doctors are Indian, Chinese, Filipino, or European.

The US is sinking to the rest of the world's model. And we might all be better served by it, assuming you can pronounce your doctor's name.
