Vietnam went through a long dark night following 1975. War went on without end, conflicts with China and Cambodia, isolation from most of the non-communist world, and unsuccessful attempts to reestablish diplomatic ties with the United States. Worse than that, the VCP was dominated by old men who believed in rigid Stalinist planning. Living standards consequently remained some of the lowest in the world.

By the late 80s however, as the Cold War wound down, Vietnam cautiously began emulating Chinese market reforms and several superannuated party elders such as Le Duan and Pham Van Dong retired, and eventually, diplomatic ties were restored with the US in the following decade.
