High taxes and less prevalent tax evasion, - more money to spend.

Low inflation and for the time being, a gold standard.

free access (or very generous grants) for education for those who wanted it, an abundance of opportunity for those in the trades, etc.

Post-war boom, lots of new things needed to be built or repaired, lots of investors ready with money, lots of economic activity.


While we have more economic activity than ever before, on an unprecedented scale, a huge proportion of the money made today will not see taxes. It gets syphoned out of the country through shell companies in tax havens where it then sits there comfortably until it gets 'donated' into a 'charity' or 'fund' which then launders the money back to the beneficiaries in their host nations, again tax free.

This is the major problem, as tax remains the most effective form of wealth redistribution that we have in this system. 50% of the world's wealth is owned by 1% of the world's population now. This is not an effective form of economics, not even for the wealthy, as they still rely on the population to buy the shit they're selling, and if they can't sell their products because everyone's too poor then economic activity plummets and all the big numbers on their bank account screens will become meaningless.

This is in some small way, an interesting consequence of fiat currency, and perhaps a reason why the elite should have some stake in the continued well-being of the masses, as without us using money, they wouldn't be rich any more. The cynic in me feels that this may be the simple reason why universal basic income is gaining traction among elite liberal circles - though what we really should have is wealth redistribution at the business level - i.e. cooperatives by law.
