Which is a better language to learn as an American? I don't want to do some meme-tier shit like become an English teacher like fat otakus are attempting right now, but I am interested in living in East Asia for other career fields. Maybe IT, maybe translating, hell maybe even food service, fuck if I know.
I'm worried though because I could see both going wrong.
If I learn Cantonese, Beijing could go trigger happy one day and declare Hong Kong and Macau to be part of da grorious ccp. And honestly I fucking hate commies.
But if I learn Japanese, in a couple decades time the entire population could be fucked beyond repair. Also I'd have to deal with weebs and otakus.
And Hong Kongers or Japs want to give me some perspective on what they think the better option would be?
Cantonese, Hong Kong has great relations with China and is the most capitalist place in the world desu, your ccp nightmare won't happen. Japs are autistic and their market for foreigners is already flooded with autists, Cantonese would be a good base for Hokkien for Taiwanese too, since you can learn traditional characters, and Taiwan is an amazing place.

>Taiwan
But Taiwan speak mandarin?

They speak hokkien Taiwanese, which is closer to mandarin than Cantonese, but it's different. They use traditional characters, which would make learning Cantonese more applicable to learning Taiwanese in the future. You can re-read my post.

>Hong Kong has great relations with China
ah I see. That must be why so many booksellers who sell books critical of the CCP have been getting kidnapped lately. Must also be why there haven't been any protests against the CCP in Hong Kong lately.

They all learn mandarin in school I think, but it's not their native language.

It's slowly becoming a 2nd tier Chinese city, despite all the localist movements going on.
People with money send their kids off to Canada and such

So would you recommend against living there?
>>68339747
>Hong Kongers or Japs
t. zhang
dont learn japanese racists are uncalled for
>>68340774
Why would you ever want to live here?
>terrible climate
>shit air
>insufferable, miserable locals
>lack of cultural identity
>>68339747
as science researches Japanese language is very special, i recommend to learning Japanese.

>beautiful city and architecture
>cheap public transit
>english is an official language that's plastered on all signage
>every street looks like something out of blade runner
>food i've never tried before
>good night life and shopping culture
>lots of jobs
I'm aware of it's problems, but it's really just about everything I could want out of a city, save for the massive looming commie threat.
Cantonese got more swear words
