Which is a better language to learn as an American? I don't want to do some meme-tier shit like become an English teacher like fat otakus are attempting right now, but I am interested in living in East Asia for other career fields. Maybe IT, maybe translating, hell maybe even food service, fuck if I know.
I'm worried though because I could see both going wrong.
If I learn Cantonese, Beijing could go trigger happy one day and declare Hong Kong and Macau to be part of da grorious ccp. And honestly I fucking hate commies.
But if I learn Japanese, in a couple decades time the entire population could be fucked beyond repair. Also I'd have to deal with weebs and otakus.
And Hong Kongers or Japs want to give me some perspective on what they think the better option would be?

They speak hokkien Taiwanese, which is closer to mandarin than Cantonese, but it's different. They use traditional characters, which would make learning Cantonese more applicable to learning Taiwanese in the future. You can re-read my post.
