Special /int/ FAQ:
>What's the point of this thread?
For learners of Japanese to come and ask questions and shitpost with other learners. Japanese people learning English can come too I guess.
>Why is it here?
The mods moved us here and won't let us go anywhere else.
>Why not use the pre-existing Japanese thread?
The cultures are completely different.
>Go back to /a/
We'd like to. Bitch to the mods.

Well yeah, he corrects 俺 to 僕 because he wants to communicate respect and recognition of his lower social status. But doing that in general, even if the situation doesn't warrant it, suggests a subservient mindset because using 俺 does not take any extra effort and expresses that you do not see the other party as having higher status. Using 僕 amongst equals, except perhaps when politely asking for a favor or something, does sound beta.

People who argue that men shouldn't use 僕 in casual situations always end up using words like "beta". It's a meme.
>>

Well, that explains a lot.
>>
I'm confused, the mods are allowing DJT over /jp/? I just noticed the thread over there that hit bump limit with like 600+ posts.

Are they testing the waters or something?
>>
>>68300482
It always boils down to "you shouldn't use 僕 unless you really have to because it makes you sound like a fag," and that's just a person's opinion about a language they don't even speak natively. There's nothing inherently beta about 僕 and if someone uses it in casual speech I don't automatically think "boot-licking people-pleaser." Just that they don't speak very gruffly.

>>

I don't think the effect is all that pronounced (pun intended), no. But now that we've gone there, let me put it like this. Imagine, if you will, a certain couple of fags. One of them uses 俺, the other 僕. Which one would you presume to be the pitcher, which one the catcher?

Yup, DJT is allowed on all boards now. We won. Feel free to post wherever you like, although try and maintain the same high quality of posting we had on /a/.

ITH is not reliably getting all the text for this particular VN, sometimes it only gets a kanji or two of the whole sentence, like in this picture.

It worked perfectly fine for another VN, how do I solve this?
>>
>>68305317
>how do I solve this?
Obligatory some games simply don't work well with a texthooker, and some require tedious implementation of H-codes, such that if a game doesn't work it's sometimes best to just read something else that does.
>>
>>68305317
1) Make sure you're using ITHVNR and not ITH
2) If you're already using ITHVNR, check for updates
3) If the above two fail, you need an h-code
4) If you can't find one, you're screwed. Try "hook any text", it's the last resort.

My general approach is to write fictional, short stories with dialogues. They are pretty weird, but Japs seem to like it - when they understand them.

Is my brain deteriorating?
>>
>>68314865
Maybe, but that started to happen to me around month 10 as well. My Young cards have surpassed matures.

I blame the lack of reading.
>>
>>68314865
Probably just a natural result of doing a lot of non-mined cards in anki.

When you start out, all the words you learn are heavily reinforced. You see them everywhere. So it is easy to have a very high rate with the first words that mature. Then after a few thousand words you start adding things that you might not see outside of anki for a while, so when they start maturing it gets harder and your mature rate drops down to something more normal.

>>
>>68316097
The biggest anki addict we've had capped out at like 21k

>an average adult knows 40k+.
These estimates are very inaccurate, and even if it is is true the majority of those are things that they don't use actively and just kinda get the meaning from the kanji and context.
>>
>>68316354
>that they don't use actively
Usage in day to day life? Sure. But if you read novels and consume fiction you will not be able to read anything without constantly looking up stuff with a vocabulary of only 15k~. If someone with only so few words opened up an eroge by Mareni and read for 10 minutes he'd probably mine 30+ words.

Although I do agree that at the 15k-20k mark you probably don't need Anki anymore and are better off manually learning things.
>>
>>68317135
>But if you read novels and consume fiction you will not be able to read anything without constantly looking up stuff with a vocabulary of only 15k

There's a lot of different levels of fiction. Mareni is above "native" level. And you're just making up that number. Certainly you can read native material with only 15k words in anki.

Native's don't "know" all words. If natives read a novel, there will be a lot of words for which they use context to infer the meaning. Even in relatively easy novels there will be words that they couldn't list off the definition of but where they can understand the sentence containing the word. I'm not native, but even if I were to read Mareni there would be a lot of words I hadn't seen before but wouldn't actually look up.

So according to the guide:
>learn kana
>research basic grammar
>download anki and core2k
>read, read, read
>research advanced grammar as it comes up while reading, and put new terms into a second anki deck
How hard is reading going to suck when you know less than 2000 words? And how long does it take to get past that stage?
>>
>>68334432
They couldn't possibly be further apart.
>>
>>68334460

>>
>>68334437
A lot but you can focus on anki until 4k words or so when reading starts getting easier
>>
>>68334437
>How hard is reading going to suck when you know less than 2000 words?
Just imagine what it would be like to read stuff in English while only knowing 2000 words.
>>
>>68334437
Depends a lot of how quickly you're able to make sense of the grammar. There's nothing worse than running into a sentence with a lot of words you don't know on top of grammar you don't fully understand. If it's just the words, though, then it doesn't really suck much. There are a lot of great tools out there to quickly look up words in a dictionary assuming you're reading stuff on your computer.

I'll probably be reading baby's first manga for the most part, so text hooking or whatever isn't really an option. I've skimmed through Tae Kim already and most of it made sense, but I'm going to go through it again and take notes.

>>68334553
I've always had a broad vocabulary so I literally can't imagine that.

Nothing to it but to do it. Thanks guys.
>>
>>68334733
>I'll probably be reading baby's first manga for the most part, so text hooking or whatever isn't really an option.
That's fine. For manga, use KanjiTomo and you're set.
>>
Learning question, do you consider it absolutely necessary to understand a text on its entirety in order to improve your language skills?
>>
>>68334437
Depends on how much dictionary lookup you can tolerate. I was able to ditch the dictionary while reading shounen manga, ending up with less-than-full but more-than-adequate comprehension, after having internalized all the grammar in the DoBJG and being familiar with some from the DoIJG, knowing all the 常用漢字 + a couple hundred more, and being halfway through Core6k. That was much sooner than I had anticipated, but as it turns out informed guesses based on context and Kanji knowledge go a long way toward compensating for a lack of vocabulary.
>>
>>68334748
>Kanjitomo
Hey this sounds neat.
My plan was to use jisho radical lookup to find the constituent kanji of unfamiliar terms, then use rikaichan to import the jukugo into an anki deck. Maybe this will expedite the process.

Thanks again.
>>
>>68334791
The "rule" I set for myself back when I started was to skip it if I can't make sense of it within a reasonable amount of time, but if I'm finding myself skipping so much that I can't understand what's going on, drop what I'm reading/watching and go for something easier.

The reasoning being that if you're able to fill those holes with the context, you're still learning. If you don't understand the context, then that doesn't work anymore and you could be doing something more productive. That said, I have nothing to back that up with and is only based on what I think makes sense.
>>
>>68334872
Wait, you knew the 2100ish jouyou kanji within the span of a year?
Are you a computer?
>>
>>68334791
>do you consider it absolutely necessary to understand a text on its entirety in order to improve your language skills?

I'd say so, yeah. How many times on a daily basis would you say you read a straightforward text in your native language and get confused by a full sentence or sentences and just end up guessing on what it says based on context? Hardly ever right? Especially if you don't move out of your particular area of interests whether they be fantasy novels or scientific articles or what have you.

Of course that's not to say that you have to put everything else on hold until you understand it. You can always just go back once you've read more and perhaps encountered similar conventions that are more feasibly comprehensible to assist you in understanding what you couldn't before.
>>
>>68335019
You could do 10 kanji a day and know well over 3k after a year, and 10 isn't really a crazy amount either, especially if you don't care about production.
>>

Having both a DJT on /int/ and here would indeed be a good idea. I'm not sure how many of you realize DJT was polluted with cancerous bloggers who actually enjoy they stay on /int/ right as I am typing this.

Not farther than yesterday some of them were saying about how people from /a/ or /jp/ are autistic about otaku culture and how they're happy about them being gone from the DJT /int/ thread. This and countless messages about how /int/ is nice because no one can tell them to fuck off with their avatarfagging and constant shitposting. "If we can't blog and shitpost there's no point to DJT". So yes, two DJT is a marvelous idea. /int/ is a trash can anyway, who cares if they get one more facebook thread in their catalog.
>>
>>68335353
Learned the readings via words. I just wanted to get as quickly as possible to the point where I could open a manga with furigana, see something like 嘘発見器(うそはっけんき), and guess that it meant lie detector based on the individual Kanji meanings + context.
>>
When studying radicals should I also study the readings for each radical, or just the meaning of the radical in English?
>>
>>68335462
Okay so in other words, yes, you did use an isolated kanji study method like RTK.
10 a day sounds reasonable then. But even just kunyomi readings for 10 a day would make my head explode. I know kanji can have like 10 onyomi/nanori readings and that shit is nightmarish.
>>
Speaking of kanji is there a list sorted by number of readings?
>>
>>68335716
Trying to memorize readings without context is a waste of time, it's much easier if you know lots of words that use the kanji.
10 a day is very little.
>>
>>68335267
>>fuck you guys, it's our sekrit club over at /jp/, you guy are just fat fucks for wanting to learn a language and not solely using japanese cartoons to do it!

wew lad
>>
>>68335770

So I guess that applies to radicals too, right? When studying radicals only the meaning in English is important?
>>
>>68335834
Memorize whatever you want with regard to radicals, chances are you aren't going to use most of the meanings anyway since they get into complicated and useless ones past a certain number of strokes. I don't really know how readings are relevant to radicals by themselves. It's true that a lot of kanji with the same radical also have the same onyomi but you don't really need to intensely study a radical to get that knowledge, you pick it up fairly easily through kanji.
Radicals are basically a tool to help you understand and learn kanji. Kanji also use variants on a lot of radicals.

You should learn the kanji's rough meaning themselves before you worry about readings, yes. In the same way you learned the "ABC" song as a child without actually knowing how to spell.

After you've done this, you will soak up vocabulary and readings.

If you try to do both at once, you will just slow down your efforts.

>DJT is for learning the fucking language you dunce.
For the purpose of enjoying said cartoons.

If /jp/ is going to be a thing then I might stay there if this is going to be the shitty blogging thread.

Don't fucking infer or project the reasons why the people here are learning. The thread may had been on /a/, but DJT has attraction a lot of different people in the past years, and people learning solely to read manga and VN or to watch anime are a minority here.

Your reasons are fine too, but if you lack respect towards language learners for not liking cartoons, then you will garner no respect in return.
>>
>>68337103
It is in fact you who is the minority here and needs to fuck off to the other Japanese thread here on /int/

Yeah, because it was for anime, manga and other weebshit.
>but DJT has attraction a lot of different people in the past years
Yeah, I noticed.
>and people learning solely to read manga and VN or to watch anime are a minority here.
What
> if you lack respect towards language learners for not liking cartoons, then you will garner no respect in return.
Fuck off to the learning thread that's already there for you faggot
>>
>>68337133
No, the other thread is not for language learning, this one is. The other one would suit your needs a lot more.

I'm not even a blogposter or an avatarfag, I just want these threads to be pertinent for language learners, and not simply ingroup faggots bashing beginners with language questions simply because arrogant weebs get triggered by stupid shit.
>>
>>68337103
>The thread may had been on /a/, but DJT has attraction a lot of different people in the past years, and people learning solely to read manga and VN or to watch anime are a minority here.

Well, I guess I'm off to /jp/
>>
>>68337195
You can ask questions in the other thread and get answers just like here. Only difference is they don't talk about anime and manga there so it's a better fit for you
>>
>>68337186
Well this is the death of DJT then, people telling people learning the language to fuck off to a thread where they solely discuss nip culture and lack the epople or the ressources to be helpful in any way for learning the language. You sekrit club fuckers have shat up DJT from /a/ to here and finally to its grave.

Rip some radio bangumis from YouTube, basically voice actors being interviewed/chatting.

If you're looking for more textbooky stuff, I used to use this one for French, without a textbook, just listening to it in English/French for getting a translation on the spot:

Why japs copys Korean martial arts culture so much?
>teakwondo is original style of Japanese modern karate
>Haidong Gumdo is original style of ken jitsu
>Yudo is original style of judo.
>Guhapdo is original style of iaido
>geomdo is original style of ken do
>Hapkido is original style of aikido
>And
>Tang Soo Do is original style of Japanese karate (not a ryukyu karate)

Gongkwon Yusul is Korean jiujitsu.

> Tae Kwon Do is the originated from ancient Korean martial arts like Taekkyeon which has a 2000years of history. And modern Japanese ”karate”is actually originated and copied from Korean tea kwon do and Taekkyeon traditions during the jap occupation of Korea at ww2.

People would say Those things are original style of jap martial arts
Yes it's true

But actually Not so. it's just Korea and japan is almost exactly the same culture . . Or very similar culture. Thats not a original style but both Korea and Japanese culture is exactly the same things which copied from great china. That is why they are look similar.
Korean culture and jap culture is almost the same things at all.

The Original Korean Martial Art - Taekkyeon is one of the most oldest and hardest martial arts.
Do you know Taekkyeon?

In korea, there is very very few people hate japan. Reality is no one fucking care about east monkey.(especially young korean never care about japs).
But the Japanese commarcials as like Korea hate japan so much but it's no.
In reality, jap is the one huge racist to Korea and hate korea. But Korea never care about japs.
Japan did a very big war crime on Korea but Korea did nothing to japan.
Why the fuck japs are so racist to Korea?
Korea has a reason of hate japs because japs sted culture of Korea and destroyed beautiful tradition of Korea
But Japs has no reason to hate Korea but they hate Korea so much
It meaning japs are inborn racist.
Again in Korea, no one care about east monkey japs
But japs is the one huge racist and blame Korea.
Give me a break you jap racist

Japanese have always done that - they import foreign culture and adapt it to their own needs and cultural preferences.

It is the best way to go about it - you don't shut yourself away from the world like Cuba or North Korea, but you also don't get your own culture diluted like it's happening in Europe.

That's how they got their writing system, their religion, their modern technology, even their current culinary.

By not being afraid of assimilating positive things and tossing the needless bits. Now praise shoyu spaghetti.

I am fighting against jap nationalist who make a evil propaganda and never face the reality.
Jap nationalist is like a robot who has no even human heart to care about others such as victim of Japanese war criminal who suffering the feeling even now...
Japan should apologies from the heart and take care them until they can forget the horrible night that jap army raped them until die.... As a comfort woman.
Comfort woman has even human rights to live without suffering the memory that was raped by jap ugly monkey army. Japan must support them. This is a true human heart and apologize from the heart who attacked someone else victims. Even now they destroy the feeling of victim such as Abe the nationalist monkey Japanese. This is what we call a second rape and second war criminal by japs to asia

What? Weaboo you are truly a hopeless stupid suck of my shit.
Learn the truth and history if you are posting on this bored!
Japan did a world most evil war crime and never apologize from the heart and accept it even once. what a stupid monkey japs are. rape of Nanking, massacre by unit731 and rape of comfort woman jap army kidnaped more than milion of Korean lady and used them as a sex slave until they die.
how many asian girls were killed and raped by jap army? and they never face this clear reality. japs are world most evil race why not god punish and destroy jap
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanking_Massacre
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unit_731
Japan your worse than Hitler and the Nazis.war crimes are not just limited to massacre. Special units of the Japanese military carried out experiments on Chinese POWs and civilians in the early 1940s. The Unit 731 led by Shirō Ishii subjected these Chinese people to experiments of amputations, vivisection and biological weapon testing. Chinese prisoners were let to freeze outside with their arms exposed and occasionally soaked in water to freeze to a solid state. The arms were amputated while the doctors repeated the procedures on the upper part of the arm connecting to the shoulder and later removed the legs finally leaving a chest and the head, which caused 3000 deaths. The Imperial Japanese Army collectively killed 580,000 people. What I want is just japs to apologies all over the Asia what Japanese did and accept the own crime of raping Korean woman and massacre which done by jap army in whole Asia. and just applogise from the heart. this is the first step of establish a true relationshit of asia. without it, offcouse whole asia would blame jap untill jap accept it. even jap applogised its war crime its not the meaning jap would be forgiven. never.
but a first step. just jap must accept own war crime and educate it in school forever and apologise from the heart. its what jap needed to do right now.
>>
>>68340558
What does that have to do with importing culture?
Germany did WW2 and is still sinking in a sea of muslims, so there is no relation.

Now stop soiling this thread with your disgusting gook fingers, this thread is for people who like Japanese culture to learn its language.

Sakuraba(japs) was complete loser in that martial arts game. But he blamed akiyama(korean)(complete winner of the game) had oil cream on his body so Sakuraba couldn't fight well(it's not).
And how do you think the end of it?
Akiyama kicked out from the martial arts tournament of japan and he had to go to UFC instead.
WHAT A RCUST STYPID MINKEY JAPS

Why japs are extremely racist every time like this.

Jap is doing this kind if extremely racist act all the time.
