During those dark days some regions were TURKED and apparently people who did not adopt Islam and change their names to turkish ones were executed. Somehow over the years those people got assimilated and started identifying as turks.
Tbqh there were a lot more turks after we gained independence,but they were removed ;-)

I've seen Christians shy about their religion and turks got much worse stuff than cristians during socialism.
Some of them were forced to change names by the state to sound more Bulgarian.
In short nobody really parades or is confrontist with his religion. How serious they are about it? No idea, they don't bring it up.
It's almost strange, we often talk about our turks, but never about them as Muslims.

also we have " turks" who aren't muslim, just have those roots
also a lot of our "turks" are just people living in turkey who have bulgarian citizenship (communists chased them out)

lastly the turks / muslims we do have eat pork, drink alcohol, and all that. they are in no way the ottomans, or the turkish state, or the " terrorists" the west is bothered by in the arab world

also just like other minorities they are leaving for the west
