And no. I am not being "Islamophobic". The entire island is an authoritarian theocracy. Non-Muslims can only be there on official business, otherwise they're not welcome. The morality police is in every citizen's home making sure they live in line with Orthodox Sunni Islam.

It's hell.

The Maldives used to be Buddhist, but Arab missionaries arrived on the shores and convinced local rulers to convert with the incentive of better deals and more frequent trade.

Tiny island cities would always have their problems, but Buddhism would be much, much, much less worse for a community like that than Islam that's very, very, very xenophobic and authoritarian.
