What is the topic?

"The friend of both John and Jack" (one person)
or
"Jack's friend and John" (two different people)
or is it like saying
"John and Jack's friend" which could mean either of the previous two

The red-headed cat ate the fish.
The cate ate the red-headed fish.
The cat with a head that ate a red fish.
The head is a cat that ate a red fish.
The head is a red cat that ate a fish.

Some of the sentences sound a little weird because of the lack of context and the weirdness of the situations they describe, but they illustrate the difference that word order can make in English.

None of those phrases form full sentences but rather describe the cat.

You gotta understand English is also heavily dependent on context and has many overlaps from a word covering multiple grammatical classes. That's why the sentence

"Police police police police police police police police." is possible.

Or those Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo ones, or James hadhadhadhadhadhadhahd blablablabla.
Here are a few: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_linguistic_example_sentences

The solution for that? Either verb conjugations that make clear the subject or noun cases. Both lacking in Japanese and English.
It doesn't clear up all ambiguity, but does a decent job.

Question:
How did you guys start learning Japanese?
The subject of this question is "You" by the way, not "Japanese". Because obviously there are a lot of people that learned without access to the guide materials, and I was wondering how successful the methods are that predate the OP.

[spoiler]Also I'm a dumbass supplicant that did Kanjidamage and tae kim, started reading Yotsuba&, got snowed in under all the anki reps/vocab mining, then gave up- but wants to try again now I've hopefully forgotten everything Kanjidamage taught me wrong.

first I did Remembering the Kanji for six months. It didn't helped me remembering the kanji, but it helped me remembering the radicals, wich is much more valuable. Then, I learned kana in three weeks; I read the tae-kim guide/did the anki 2k deck and after that I started reading.
>>
>>68182471
Let me tell you, the same methods will always lead to success, and those methods are reading/listening to native Japanese, doing flashcards, and reading grammar guides. Everything else is a minor detail (like writing out kanji, reading graded readers instead of normal books, etc).

The only thing you did wrong, really, was give up.

Hilariously enough, I stumbled upon some old Soviet textbook while working my way through the ancient library at my step-mother's summer home in a shitty village full of gypsies. That happened all the way back in middle school.

I was bored since there was no internet in that place at the time so I taught myself kana and some very basic grammar using said book, leaving it to oblivion after I left the place and returned to the city in order to get back to school after summer break was over.

I didn't pick up Japanese again until later but the whole experience pretty much led to my weeb phase, which served as the main incentive for me giving the language a more serious look at a later stage in my life.

It's okay even for reps to get to be too much, it's just that when that happens, it's best to briefly go at a slower pace (like limiting reviews) than to give up entirely. Being overwhelmed is bad, taking it too slowly is bad, but it's giving up that kills.

Yeah, I would like to wait for the Big One to pass before moving to Tokyo, but on the other hand I believe the statistics of being killed just going out in the streets here in Brazil are higher than my chance of dying on that earthquake. Take this from someone that understands the extreme gravity of your decision.

Are you trying to find an excuse to not realize your dream? My parents had to die before I realized I was just making excuses.

Remember there are only a few people in this world that can make their dreams come true, you can be one of them.

True, but sometimes you have to read between the lines on these matters.

I live by the "You can't hold on, or Life won't Change" philosophy.
>>
>>68184250
The problem with human communication is that the "reading behind the lines" you speak of breeds errors and miscommunication out the ass. Thinking carefully about what the other says and being sure to avoid assuming things without clarifying is important to remain on the same page. To me, it seems like he just liked Japan and would really enjoy going back, not as a dream but just as something he'd like to do.

That's true. However, you cannot have a payoff without some degree of risk.

When it comes to a life-changing decision like leaving your family behind for permenant indepdence, there is indeed a degree of risk, and I took a chance that perhaps his reasoning for going to Japan might be something a bit more rooted.

If it wasn't a serious decision i wouldn't have even attempted making such a claim.

>Being overwhelmed is bad, taking it too slowly is bad, but it's giving up that kills.
In my case I had 3 decks on the go:
Core6K, Kanjidamage, and a vocab mining deck I was assembling while reading Yotsuba.

In the end I just kept forgetting things. And my number of daily reps became absurd as a result.
We're talking 250+ fresh reviews a day.
That might not be much for some, but with all that and 20 new cards (10 per deck, with front/reverse), it took ~40 minutes- towards the end of which I'd be too exhausted to learn the hardest bits.
Anyway I'll quit whinging now.

Moved on to Tae Kim, did Core for awhile.
The jump into Core didn't go very well, so I picked up KanjiDamage for awhile. Went back to Core and it was a lot easier.

I didn't.

I live in a town that does not teach Japanese.

My high schools don't teach japanese. My community colleeges don't teach japanese. There is a social stigma here against people that like Japan because nobody is taught about it. There is a grand total of -one- japanese class at the college here, and it's an online-only history class nobody takes

The social stigma was shared by my parents, who didn't support me one bit, so in all respects I was taught by society and family that japan is bad country and i should not learn language.

Mixed. It gives you time before a new card shows up and makes you able to tell new words apart from old words.
If you know whether or not a card is old before even doing it, it's not really making you use your memory.

Maybe you know 1-2k words but if you don't know kanji you probably aren't anywhere close to the ~10k you need to be fluent much less the 20k you need to be near native level.

It's somewhat nitpicky though. But if you already know the word you have a big advantage compared to everyone else who didn't already know the words so you really shouldn't be complaining. As >>68199220 said you just gotta spend a couple minutes with each pair that you mix up and actually look at what is different. I'd recommend reading through the first couple hundred kanji entries from RTK to get used to breaking kanji down. You don't need to do the whole book, just get a feel for how the method works so you can apply it when necessary.

Not translating is necessary to understand stuff at a reasonable pace. If you're focusing on phrases and sentences, especially with audio, you can't understand them without at least temporarily internalizing the word. Also this >>68200393, I focus on reading more than meaning in anki. It basically just comes down to reading and listening more.

As long as the meaning is somewhat close, yes. But it's a bit complicated because it depends on the phase of learning. If you're rushing through Core6k I think it's fine to just learn the approximate meaning and figure out the details through native material. But with mining often I mine the word with learning the meaning as my goal.

Also, I tend to get more strict about the meaning with time. If the card has a 4 month interval and I still don't know the meaning very well I am more likely to mark it wrong, but if it's a new card I don't worry about it as much.

Also, this is because I do a lot of anki and am willing to sacrifice some things in order to cover more words. If you're under 100 reps a day then fuck it just learn the meanings properly.

I've read that translating is bad so you should make flashcards with Japanese on one side and a picture on the other side instead of English, but that is a really retarded idea. You cannot skip the translation phase. Eventually with enough exposure it will naturally go away.

The 1st time you see kawaii, you translate it as cute. The 10th time you see it, you still might translate it as cute. But by the 100th time, you just understand it.
>>
>>68201415
>If you're rushing through Core6k I think it's fine to just learn the approximate meaning
I second this.

I more often than not get myself thinking about the meaning of a word but the English equivalent (or even Portuguese) take a while to come to mind.

But I guess since Japanese is my fourth language, that comes from already being used to attaching new words to abstract ideas, not translations.
If you're EOP, that might take a bit of practice - my English days were a bit of literal translation until I got the hang of it.

If you keep it in mind from an earlier stage, though, you can build better habits - ESPECIALLY because pictographs will give you some sort of abstract, even intuitive meaning to rely on that a language with common alphabet couldn't provide as easily.
>>
>>68201415
>>68200953
>>68201685

I don't think it's actually possible to learn the meaning of some words through a jisho definition. It's just an approximate meaning of the word in english, with no details about how to use it. Accordingly there is no reason to memorize the english definition of a word.

I only do a mining deck, but when I see a word I never worry about whether or not I know the exact vocabulary jisho is going to use. I just think about whether I honestly know the word or not, press the according button ("again" if I get the reading wrong) and reread the daijirin definition if it's something I don't have a full grasp on.

"Just learn the meanings properly" is something you can't do through anki imo.
>>
>raw manga thread died while I was reading raw manga

>>
>>68200953
In some cases, it will be perfectly obvious to you that you got the meaning of the word wrong, and in those cases you should mark it as such. But you need to be aware of the fact that in many cases, you can't fully understand the meaning of the word just by SRSing it against some English close equivalent. Instead, you need to experience it in a variety of situations and figure out how it is used by natives to facilitate certain communicative intents. This boils down to exposure to a lot of native reading/listening materials and more-or-less informed guesswork on your part.

Please heed this advice. N1 isn't even native or near-native level of fluency. It's just fluent according to polyglots' standards.

It's only like 60 dollars for the test itself, but the test centers are fairly spread out. So for many of us the cost of transportation is as much as the test itself
>>
>>68204441
>It's just fluent according to polyglots' standards.
Wrong, it is completely perpendicular to fluent according to polyglots' standards because it doesn't test speaking, and barely tests listening.

I don't know about the test itself, but if you've looked at practice material for N1 you would know that it actually is near native level in terms of reading. BUT only if you can actually read and understand everything, which is of course much more difficult than passing with a 100/180

Neah I don't really care I can judge myself, and for most people learning Japanese using normal methods, their speaking and listening will be their best skills. So it doesn't matter so much.

It just means you have to take it into account with regards to what the N1 actually means.

I studied German for one year and Japanese for three, same amount of time for both. Turns out i'm much better in german than in japanese. I actually found the best way to study German, which is to grind Anki, Duolingo and reading LingQ's texts (god bless Steve Kaufmann). In this way I can study the main forms of learning a language (reading, writing, speaking, listening).

But lingQ is not quite good to learn eastern languages such japanese and korean, and just doing Anki does not help me at all. What is the best way to learn Japanese? I know I should grind at Anki, but just that does not help me. Is there any application for eastern languages like lingq?

I have only been doing Duolingo reps for 12 months and, even though my skill is not exactly expanding since it's just redoing the same old shit, I can already speak French with some dexterity and be understood quite well.
My listening is shit, because those robot voices are a bit too soft on us, but hey, it's a great system for practicing all the four language skills and getting a basic grip of a language.

Not sure how they would go to teach non-latin script, but that's not my problem.

I mean it's not like it's completely useless but it's really not optimal. That said I can't guarantee there are significantly better resources for french. It seems the difficulty of asian languages results in much better tools to actually learn them, whereas with easy european languages people just don't bother.
