It seems bad on the surface, but when you consider that a "literati" subculture only existed in the biggest countries for only a few hundred years, it's not so bad.

I think there is a lot of talent that could be applied to making Gaeilge great again, but I also think the academics and Gaeltacht people aren't so bad that they couldn't make serviceable narratives.

Outside the Latin countries, where the transition from writing Latin to the vernacular wasn't an abrupt shift, the way the vernacular language came to the fore was from the removal of the cultural influence of the writers in the foreign language, generally meaning the Catholic church and the monasteries.

All that needs to be done to restore Irish is to ban the sale of fiction books written in English unless they are translated into Irish, and to ban media in English that isn't dubbed.
The initial Irish media complex would abound in translations, but after a generation, there would be enough literacy and skill developed to create a proper "Golden Age" of Irish culture for the first time in more than a thousand years.

That's all assuming a regime in charge of the laws and the "in-crowd" in the publishing and writing businesses, not the West Brits we've had since day 1.
