true in a way - the two halves might as well be different countries
Michigan, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Illinois and Ohio seem to me to be the most stereotypically American states. They're not New Englanders, they're not Southern, but they're not really Midwestern either, either the the stereotypical "aww shucks, you betcha" Upper Midwesterner, with their regimented Scandinavian collectivism, or the farm-dominated culture in the plains states farther West. Indiana might fall into the farm culture category, but that's about it.
They're kind of just there, acting as a buffer zone between New England, the Midwest, and East Coast urban tough guy culture.
You could also put the majority of Upstate New York as part of this "general American culture", though the Adirondacks and North Country identify themselves with New England, and everywhere south of the city of Hudson is definitely in the "East Coast tough guy" culture.
