Special /int/ FAQ:
>What's the point of this thread?
For learners of Japanese to come and ask questions and shitpost with other learners. Japanese people learning English can come too I guess.
>Why is it here?
The mods moved us here and won't let us go anywhere else.
>Why not use the pre-existing Japanese thread?
The cultures are completely different.
>Go back to /a/
We'd like to. Bitch to the mods.

I get confused which thread is djt and which one is the regular Japanese thread. I just look at the /int/ part of the tab name as think its the Japanese thread

You can filter DJT to always be at the top of the board if you use it a lot.

I asked a stupid question yesterday and I got ignored and trolled. It made me feel more できない. And since I still consider myself a beginner, even though I'm almost finished reading all よつばと!. Perhaps I may need to reread TK. I only see like one other flip poster here in /djt/. These flags need to go. This is no better than trip posting desu senpai.
>>
>>68151059
The alternative is /jp/ and have you been to /jp/?

Also, I find that when I ask questions that people don't know the answer to they'll just ignore it. There's probably very few people here that actually learned Japanese to an advanced level. And people are less willing to answer old questions so just re-post it later. It helps sometimes.

Hm my eyes were drawn to the fixed thread here on /int/ and its image shows us some ways to say hello in various languages. It has "oi" and "olá" side by side and in the same color to stress the point that they're from the same language and you can use either
But then it goes and shows 今日は in a random color and こんにちは in a different one...
>>
>>68153322
Jesus
>>
>>68154964
Well 今日は is technically correct but might as well be wrong so you can't just use either

>>68155160
Yeah, it is a bit strange to see it in kanji but it's the same word and that's what I found odd

>>68155317

Japanese is my fourth language. But if you count Spanish, which is a free bonus for every Portuguese speaker, you can say I'm already at five, even though I won't pursue Spanish. Choo choo!

New here, friend? On /a/, the mods said "only one thread at a time." This was interpreted by some (see: the same few people who always made the new thread) to mean "wait until the thread dies to make a new one". And so it has been, for like four years or something. The inertia keeps it going. Only one thread up at a time. No matter what people want or say or expect. One at a time. Until some int newbie starts posting the threads.

Are you FUCKING KIDDING ME?

Why would you use memrise instead of just more anki though? What does memrise have that anki doesn't?

By the way, the main problem with memrise is that multiple choice is a garbage way to test yourself, and typing the answer takes too much time.

It's always a matter of how eager you are to actually use the language.
There's an anon at 55chan who read the whole RTK book for 8 months without studying any vocabulary or readings, only focusing on kanji recognition and creating mnemonics for their general meaning. No grammar either.

I on the other hand jumped straight into the vocabulary mess with all irregular readings and mishmash of similar kanji. Also no grammar.

I also have a friend who read all of Tae Kim's guide without ever touching on any sort of kanji/vocabulary study. He can easily make sense out of a sentence, provided he can put every individual kanji on a dictionary and get a translation. That is really time-consuming, so now he's doing some Anki too.

So yeah, there you go, three "pure" experiences. each has its advantages.
Going for kanji study makes it easy to recognize all of them and really understand their meaning in a compound. Facilitates vocabulary study.
Going straight for vocabulary helps not having to check the dictionary all the time, but brings a bit of confusion with similar kanji.
Going for grammar allows you to understand the text with the most precision, but gives you no independence from dictionaries.

In the end you will probably have to study everything, just put your main focus where you most want to improve for the time being.

It being a meme was the meme, at least for me. I started out doing Core6k at 20 new cards per day. Plus reviews this ended up taking about an hour a day; too slow for my liking. I then did KKLC for 40 days at 50 Kanji per day (read mnemonics, added to Anki, tested recognition), and picked up Core6k where I left it off. I ended up being able to go at 60 new cards + reviews per hour, triple my previous rate. Moreover, because I learned to see Kanji in terms of radicals and through the lense of mnemonics, I am now less likely to fail to recognize words I should know just because they're in a different font, or fail to identify identical Kanji in occuring in different words, and so on. All in all, Kanji study was definitely well worth it for me, so if you're struggling more than you think you should, consider giving it a try.

You focus on learning to recognize the kanji and associating it to the keywords, particularly the bolded ones.
>>68163537
What do you want to know?
>>
>>68162830
I can only tell you what worked for me, so take this with a grain of salt, but I believe that if you're going to do dedicated Kanji study in order to divide-and-conquer the vocab learning task, there's no point in trying to also learn vocab (or readings, for that matter) at the same time.

I just used the example vocab to check my understanding of the keywords and try to see how the Kanji keywords combined to yield the word meanings, but what I really focused on was nailing down just the Kanji<->Keyword associations so I could proceed with vocab study ASAP. I didn't bother writing anything down, either.
>>
>>68163185
>>68163189
You realize not everyone puts several hours daily into this, right? Your regular Anki Core rate of 20 new cards a day gives you 4800 words in 8 months, with somewhere between 1200 and 1400 kanji.

(Actually RTK covers 2100 if I'm not mistaken), so it's a difference of 900~700 kanji with the benefit of not mixing up them when they show up in vocabulary study.

Not to mention if someone did it in 3 months like RTK suggests, that'd be a 1100 kanji difference.

Once you know the kanji, you can probably crank up the Anki new cards volume and catch up really fast.

For a thread where people unironically take English university courses and spend a semester learning kana, you are really trigger-happy to shoot efficient methods that are not optimal.

>>68163537

>What do you want to know?
I want to know which resources are worth me dedicating my time into studying to quickly and efficiently get me to a point in which I can read basic Japanese so that I can play my shitty video games without having to wait for years for them to be localized.
That's all.
>>
>>68163537
You're the one who's dumb. You should be able to work out how to study on your own, no one else can give you a perfect study plan because what worked for them might not work for you.
That said, do grammar before anything else. Then watch a lot of cartoons, and study either vocab in kanji or the kanji themselves, whichever goes smoother for you, because you'll need kanji to read.
Honestly it doesn't matter what order you do any of this shit in, as long as you do all of it at some point you'll have a more or less complete picture of the language in your head.
>>
>>68163637
The difference is that Core2k6k teaches you actual words, with fully voiced sentences on every card to boot.

>For a thread where people unironically take English university courses and spend a semester learning kana

You should probably just start working through a comprehensive beginner's textbook like Genki. After a couple of chapters/weeks, you'll know what you're struggling with the most, and at that point coming here for specific advice becomes sensible.
>>
>>68163637
I did RTK briefly because I was convinced by its marketing scheme.

It took me around 2-3 weeks of an hour-a-day studying to get to around 800 kanji. I mean, it's suuuuuuuper easy. And that's with writing it out (on my hand with my finger).

Taking 8 months to do it is either lazy or really, really, really, really slow.

>>68163777
>The difference is that Core2k6k teaches you actual words, with fully voiced sentences on every card to boot.
This is where I went after and even that wasn't too great. Honestly (imo) the best thing is to learn a good 500-1000 easy common words through Core and just start reading. Get your vocab from what you're reading.

>>68163537
There's more than one way to skin a cat, dipshit. This isn't Reddit where we just tell you to get Genki and join a University class.

>>68163740
Here's the deal: there's no way for us to guess which resources will work best for you. Some people swear by RTK/KKLC/KD, and some people have learned over 3000 kanji purely from vocab. You have to find your optimal path by yourself because it's different for everyone.
There are three resources that I'd recommend to anyone, however: Tae Kim's grammar guide (concise and comprehensive enough for basic reading material), DoJG (by far the single best J-E grammar resource), and the first 2000 words of Core.

Utter bullshit, you can give people a perfect study plan for quite literally every other language out there, so there's no reason why the same cannot be done for this one. It's not some magical fucking impossible language which is what people are seemingly trying to make it out to be.

It's not possible to make a "perfect study plan" for anything. Nothing can be perfect for everybody, that's the point here.

>So Tae Kim grammar despite not knowing any kanji at all? And that will be fine for the most part?
Yes, you don't need to know any kanji or vocabulary to do TK's grammar guide. You can mouse over words to see what they mean. Doing his guide first will give you a nice foundation, then you can reinforce everything and improve your comprehension by watching a lot of cartoons, and reading when you're good enough to read.

Yes. They immediately asked if I watch anime and I said "sometimes" and they laughed saying that they thought I did. It was only when I had to explain that I also like reading books (basically I'm not just a mindless weeb) that they had a little respect for me.

I don't know, other languages don't get this kind of treatment. It's not fair and it only encourages me to hide it. But I'd choose Japanese and this weird weeb shit over people any day. Thank god there's the internet so I'm not completely alone either. Love you faggots.

>>
>>68166577
I did Genki and didn't regret it. That said, unless you want to produce (speak/write), you can safely skip the exercises and instead rely on subbed anime (listening for known words/phrases/grammar) and the voiced example sentences from the Core6k deck to reinforce all the basic grammar/conjugations until they becomes intuitive. Regular exposure to the spoken language should be a part of your studies anyway.
>>
>>68166899
Some people just tend to bring you down when they hear you're doing something that requires time and effort which is not related to work, school, fitness or sex.
They seem to be unable to understand that not everyone is a mindless drone with no passions like them. Of course Japanese has the extra weeb stigma attached to it.
>>
>>68165455
I feel less lonely now. I still watch all of my anime with English subs because of occasional words I don't get. Sure I could watch raw and boast about "how I watch my anime raw" but it wouldn't be worth missing out on whatever I didn't get.

Also I generally watch anime when I do food breaks so I sometimes don't fully pay attention so subs sometimes help.

I wish we had reliable Japanese subs for currently airing series.
>>
Okay I'm back with 1 more dumb as fuck question to try understand something.

明るい. This means bright, right? But if that means bright, why is this Tae Kim and other sources simply listing 明 alone as bright?

Am I missing something incredibly obvious here? Do they both just mean bright and I'm reading into this shit too much? But if so then what's the point of the first one I listed having the two extra hiragana at the end?
>>
>>68167518
明るい is a word (an i-adjective to be exact).

明 is a kanji, which if we had to stick a general English "definition" or "keyword" to it would be "bright" because this kanji is generally, mostly, used in words related to "bright".
See :
http://jisho.org/search/%E6%98%8E%20%23kanji
Under On/Kun reading compounds you have word examples in which this kanji is used.

We agree that 女 is the kanji for woman, right? Well, same logic here.
>>
>>68167462
Don't get complacent.
>it wouldn't be worth missing out on whatever I didn't get.
You won't miss out on anything as long as you make some effort to look it up, and if you do look things up, mine words, etc. you'll learn more and faster.
Intensive listening can be really useful. Watching lots of english subbed anime is good exposure nonetheless of course, but without any intensive listening practice those crutches won't go away for years.
>>
>>68165913

Are you doing anki alongside it?

use your head a little, figure out how to "do tae kim" in a way that doesn't waste your time
if you're not resourceful enough to do even that then you seriously belong in a classroom

vocab won't stick if you have no context for it this is just a fact
here's an honest suggestion from me personally
don't try to memorize all the vocab
that will just slow you down a lot and make it harder for you to remember grammar points
focus on grammar and grammar alone and mouse over the words in his example sentences if you need a reminder on what certain words mean
if after giving it the old college try the grammar still doesn't make any sense to you then you're just going to have to drop the notion that you can learn japanese

Depends if I understood what was being asked.
1. Today it is raining. Yesterday it was raining.
I thought the topic would be 'today' since は was in front of today, so I figured since the other sentence was referring to yesterday it would have the も.

2. The topic is Jim, no? So I figured when the other sentence was referring to somebody else (I think that Kanji means 'I'? I dunno), it would be a change in topic which would again warrant the も.

3. Guessed because I don't know what 'Sou' is, as I mentioned in an earlier post.
Something like "This is water. This is ???"

4. Something about this pen being mine while the other one isn't?

5. Something about work tomorrow but no work today? Again I thought because the first subject was work, that it would mean when the subject switched to 'today' it would need the も.

6. Don't even know how this one ended up being correct if the same train of thought I used for the previous questions were wrong.

>'tae kim is easy'
>'try going through his grammar guide quickly so you can move on to reading actual content'

I'm sorry, but I can't remember any of the grammar rules Tae Kim teached. I can remember basic stuff like adding な after a na-adjective, but stuff like conditionals, some of the て form and the four ways to say 'if' really messed me up.
I already finished his grammar guide, but I can't really remember anything it taught me. Should I reread, touch up on sections that I can't remember or just move on? Everything felt like a blur, I couldn't remember some of the conjugation rules if my life depended on it.

Congratulations on completing Tae Kim's Grammar Guide™!
You are now well on your way to truly learning Japanese!
Your next step to get yourself on the smooth1 road to reading raw Japanese material should be to download the Yotsuba Reading Pack™ from the guide!
Yotsubato!™ is a very easy2 manga and is definitely suited for beginners that have only just finished Tae Kim's Grammar Guide™!
Even if you're having a little bit of trouble the Yotsuba Reading Pack™ should get you right back on your feet!
Don't be afraid to look back at specific chapters of Tae Kim's Grammar Guide™ if you need a refresher!

[1] - The road is not smooth. You are not prepared. The early days of trying to read raw material are absolute hell. You'll be looking up words constantly, you'll have to keep looking back at the guide and pulling your fucking hair out because it doesn't say shit about what you're reading because it's slang. It does get better eventually though. Just push through that shit. You'll probably learn more by reading (and failing) than going through Tae Kim.

[2] - Yotsuba is "relatively" easy but it can throw you off by using slang that isn't referenced in Tae Kim's Guide.
This particular shit threw me off heaps initially:
すげぇ = すごい
ねぇ = ない
じゃねぇ = じゃない
こねぇ = こない (as in 来ない)

If this thread is so easily confused maybe it shouldn't exist in the first place

But fuck it it will probably die in a month without me having to tell you not to bother

The mods moved these threads here and they don't give a shit. Just don't come in here if you don't like it.

You aren't the fucking leader of the thread dude. But I probably will just start going to the other one instead since it's identical except without you.

Also your argument here >>68175348 gave absolutely no reason why you had to make the new thread while the old one is still on page 4. Hell weve had this entire argument and it still hasn't died.

Hey dude, I'm not the person you were talking to before.

Everyone is posting on here instead of that new thread someone made.
