Both Basque Country and Cataluña have a lot of autonomy, Spain is in practice a Federal Republic. If you have kids in Cataluña, and they go to school there, they will be Catalan speakers.


The problem is their relationship with Spain is one of blackmailing and being constantly unsatisfied.

When Spain tried to become a modern Republic with equal laws for everybody instead of a feudal monarchy with different laws for different regions, that is when Basque nationalism was born, but only after decades of Basque support of reactionary monarchism in many civil wars.

I just know that Basque surnames are very ugly, there is people I know with surnames such as Echevarrieta, Zuniga, Gerena, Azanza, Uranga. Everyone here knows that If the surnames sounds ugly it's because it is a basque surname.
