This is what Muay Thai does to TKD practitioners.

If you want it for actual defense, a mix of striking and ground game is a must. Kickboxing, BJJ, Muay Thai, wrestling, etc. I preferred boxing because it was more easy on my body. It's all about tricking your opponent, developing skill, and playing the game. I tried the other stuff but it got too real too fast. You can slow down punches and pull back power, it's much harder to do so with kicks, elbows, and grappling mixed in.

If you live in a major city, chances are there is at least one pro who has a gym there. Most of the good ones will let you try it out for free if you show a genuine interest and aren't a douche.

A lot of them also have fitness equip/workshops mixed in to make the cost of the gym worth it.
