it's funposting when it's a shitty thread or a thread made by a leaf
but this is an intredasting topic that I would be happy to have an international conversation about

Does näcken/the neck count?
It's a guy who sits by a river playing very beautiful, luring people to walk into the water and drown as they get enchanted by his music. You may try to make him learn you how to play, but unless you are clever enough he will probably end up drowning you anyway.
He also got a horse, who likes to let people ride on it and then jump into the water with them on top of it so they drown. The horse may be tamed by a human but you should never bring it close to a river or other water as then it will rush into it again, drowning whoever that's on top of it

Then there's Skogsrået, a woman who lives in the woods. From affront she got the beautiful appearance and from the back she looks like a rotten hollow tree trunk. She's said to bring bad luck to greedy hunters and help those who respects nature, pretty sure she may make some people lose their way in the woods.

There was apparently a mass sighting of it at one point, and a farmer even shot it after hearing hooves on his roof, but I don't think its appearance has been reported at all in recent times.

Legends tell of a Russian that once ran through every town and every village and drank every bottle of gorilka he could find and when we ran out of gorilka he ran east and fell asleep far far away.

Here's lelek. It's a regular bird, but protopoles believed it to be some kind of forest demon that leads night travellers astray to make them drown in a swamp. For a good reason, I guess, because it's a really weird creature (his mouth is very wide and it makes weird noises).
Apparently other Europeans also had some wacky beliefs about this bird.

Sounds a lot like Celtic kelpie, I wonder if there's any connection between these two?

There are many people living here who truly believe these things are roaming around the woods, defying biology and evolution, and being covered up so parks don't scare away campers

And here are two depictions of a chmurnik (aka obłocznik, płanetnik), which literally means a "clouder" (or "planeteer").
Supposedly they were a personification of weather and clouds (upper pic) and farmers would sometimes throw some flour in the wind to please them, because a pissed off chmurnik could destroy crops with lightning and hailstorms.
Another version (lower pic) is that chmurniks were in fact humans born with strange powers, who, when a storm was coming, would enter the sky (sometimes through the rainbow) and fight air monsters to calm the weather and protect their villages.

Believes in werewolves and monsters in many shapes that cling to your back at night and force you run with them while they draw on your lifeforce or try to get you to carry them out of the woods so they can be set free into the afterlife were common.

The Basilisk is a mixture from snake and cock. It's breath is so foul it can suffocate people and it can paralyze people by staring at them. It lives in wells and basements and scared of weasels and it's own image.

Nasty buggers.

My german grandpa used to tell me about these goblin like creatures called darejüdes. The had long pointy noses that sucked blood and snuck into people houses at night. They would also be attracted to shiny things so they would steal silverware or coins from a person's house after they fed. I've tried to talk to some german friends of mine about them but they've never heard of if them before. Does /int/ know anything about them?
